Folks:

Just saw our weather forecast for the upcoming week and at least one weather-model indicates that my area of Arkansas could potentially cop 6"+/15CM+ snow this coming Wednesday--with a couple more days of sub-freezing maximums.
Light rain now (11:12PM Sun.) and temperature about 35F/1.6C.

Bring It On~~~Wet Snow

Hello Folks:
Quite cold this morning (Thur.) across Arkansas as several towns bottomed out below 0F/below -18C, setting several record minimum Date records as well. Varying amounts of snow fell across the state on Wednesday (I think northern areas copped 10"/25CM snow, we here in Mena only managed to cop 2"/5CM snow), which aided the (record-breaking) coldness.

Among (record) minimums in Arkansas this morning:
-17F/-27.2C at Fayetteville, AR (broke rec. min. for Date of -13F/-25C in 1929)
-12F/-24.4C at Gilbert, AR (broke rec. min. for Date of 0F/-17.7C in 1971)
-9F/-22.7C at Lead Hill, AR (broke rec. min. for Date of -2F/-18.8C in 1971)

Mena bottomed out at 4F/-15.5C (broke rec. min. for Date of 7F/-13.8C in 1979); hasn't been this cold in Mena since February 4 in 1996. Looks like another potentially record-breaking (Date) minimum for Friday morning here as well.

Cheers & BRRRRRRRR~~~Wet Snow

Hey Wet Snow! Whats the lowest minimum and maximum temperatures ever in Mena?

Despite the cold you must be noticing the lengthening daylight hours by now?? I can certainly notice the darker mornings here, and sunset is well before 8pm now!

Greetin's Pingtang:

The lowest temperature in Mena is -15F/-26.1C recorded during December of 1898. Not sure about Mena's all-time lowest Maximum, but I can tell you the lowest maximum I've experienced here was a maximum of 12F/-11.1C on Dec. 22, 1989.

Yes, I have been very much enjoying the lengthening daylight hours here. Today--Feb. 10th--Mena had a sunrise of 7:08AM and a sunset at 5:55PM.

As addendum to my above post about the very cold temperatures: The town of Nowata, Oklahoma--pending confirmation by NOAA--has broken the All-time record minimum for the state of Oklahoma. The town (in N Oklahoma) bottomed out at -31F/-35C this morning.
Article on the record-shattering cold is here:

How does this current spell of wintry weather compare with others you've experienced in Mena?

That's some impressive cold on that map, 17F right on the Mexican border, and almost the entire country below freezing.

Send some of that cold here, most days have been in the low 50's here. No snow either this month, and just 2 light flurries since December.

Sunrise here today was at 7:31am and sunset at 5:11pm. It's nice to have some daylight again in the evening after the long dark nights.

Hello Steve:

Well, the recent spell of Wintry weather has been a tad colder and a good bit snowier than in recent Winters. I've already had 3 separate accumulating snow events this year, totaling 8"/20.3CM Snow--so I really like the recent weather pattern in my area. We have been on a pretty good run of years snow-wise here as Mena has had at least 1 accumulating snow event each year since 2002. We had 5 snow events--totaling 7.9"/20CM snow--in 2010 and you'd have to go back to 2003 to find at least 3 snow events in a year here.
So, a total of almost 16"/40.6CM snow (possible for more) here in back-to-back years (2010-2011) is a hefty total indeed (8 snow events in that time).
Otherwise, this Winter is fairly similar to Winters in the past here.

Believe me, I'd love to send you some properly cold Winter temperatures (as this prolonged coldness likes to settle into my joints); hope you get some proper snowfalls before Winter is over as well. I am glad to see that the daylight times are lengthening in your area also.
Our maximum yesterday (Thur.) was 35F/1.6C and hard to believe that by Sunday we are forecasted to have a high exceeding 60F/15.5C!

Hi Wet Snow,

Sorry to not have answered your question regarding thundersnow in my thread. But, yes, I've heard of thundersnow occurring in Alberta. But this is a very, very rare occurrence and I have never, ever experienced such a thing firsthand myself. But I know some friends and relatives who have seen thundersnow in Northern Alberta.

Hope you get more snow and less freezing rain (or better yet, none!) in the coming weeks before spring sets in!

Hello Friends:
Here's previous weeks' weather in Mena, Arkansas:

DATE.....HIGH..........LOW............RAIN
Feb...6..49F/9.4C....26F/-3.3C....0.40"/10.1mm
.........7..34F/1.1C....26F/-3.3C....0.10"/2.5mm

.........9..30F/-1.1C...12F/-11.1C..*0.20"/5mm
........10..35F/1.6C....#4F/-15.5C...---
........11..46F/7.7C....10F/-12.2C...---
........12..60F/15.5C...21F/-6.1C....---

*=Rain equivalent of 2"/5CM snow
#=Record low minimum for Date (broke old rec. min. for Feb. 10th of 7F/-13.8C in 1979)

For the week of Feb. 6-12, Mena's Avg. Max.: 53.1F/11.7C; Avg. Min.: 29.2F/-1.5C.
The passage of a Pacific cold front--late PM on the 6th--caused the nice raintotal early-week. A vortex of Low-pressure (Pacific cold front) tracking over our area gave the Snowfall on the 9th. Early forecasts--which excited me--called for 5-7"/12.7-17.7CM of Snow to fall in my area. Sadly--as sometimes happens--the snowtotal in my area (2"/5CM) was much less than forecasted (but I'll take it). I did hear that areas of N/NW Arkansas really got clobbered with snow, one location picking up a hefty total of 25"/63.5CM! Our area picked up less Snow as we were close to the core of the Low, which often has a large dry-slot near the center. Very glad that no freezing rain fell. Thought we might get some as the precipitation that fell overnight 6th/7th was with temperatures just at or right above freezing (but the rain stayed in a liquid form). Glorious sunshine and much warmer on the 12th. Quite a bit of the snow had melted by the 11th.
Upcoming forecast calls for much warmer temperatures--above-average maximums--with not much in the way of rainchances.

Wishing ALL a Wonderful Week~~~Wet Snow
P.S. Mike, Many Thanks for that interesting information.

That's quite a jump in temperature, from almost sub zero to 70F in just a few days. That must be quite a strange feeling.

No snow at all here this month, not even a single flake of sleet. We're heading for a very mild February, despite a bit of a cool down this week.

February stands a good chance of being warmer than November.

Happy birthday wishes, have a great day.

Friends:

Many, Many Thanks for the Most Kind Birthday Wishes. In my timezone, I've got nearly an hour (well technically nearly 3 hours) before I hit the BIG 5-0.

My memory isn't what it used to be:
Doing research in my weather records and from December 1989 there have been 15 instances where the avg. minimum temperature for a week has been higher than the avg. maximum temperature of the preceeding/following week (or vice versa). I had forgotten just how many times that it has happened here throughout the years.

It looks like the average minimum temperature for this week (Feb. 13-19) will be well above the average maximum temperature for the preceeding week (Feb. 6-12).
FYI: I'll list those instances below:

For the week of Feb. 13-19: Mena's Avg. Max.: 54.8F/12.6C; Avg. Min.: 30.5F/-0.8C.
WoW! What a difference 2 weeks makes! After a cold & snowy previous week, it felt more like Spring this week. In fact, the avg. max. this week was 67.0F/19.4C and this was the warmest February week--avg. maximum-wise--since the week of Feb. 18-24, 2007 (avg. max. that week was 67.1F/19.5C) and before that, it was the warmest February week since Feb. 18-24 in 1996. My 50th birthday was on the 19th, and I had the warmest birthday maximum since Feb. 19 in 1986. The weekly mean avg. temperature of 58.2F/14.5C is the warmest February weekly-average mean temperature here since before 1987.
Had a dry Pacific cold front pass through on the 13th, this front became stationary to my south and passed back through my area as a warm front--dry--on the 15th. Hence, from the 15th onwards, sky conditions ranged from solid cloudcover to partly cloudy. Warm, and sometimes gusty, Southerly winds aided the unseasonal warmth (and it did feel somewhat humid). Cloudcover persisted over my area (or the maximums would have been even higher) as a Stationary front was to my north on the last couple days of the week; did see a nice amount of sunshine on the 19th. Has been so mild that crocus flowers are starting to bloom and jonquil shoots are poking above ground. Couldn't believe my eyes but I actually saw a mosquito (in Winter!) on the 18th. The warmer conditions are nice, but this time of year they will not last for long. Indeed, a cold front will drop the maximums to more seasonal levels by Monday. This shot of cooler air (& rainchances) won't last as warmer weather is forecasted for later in the week. The brutally cold (& excessively snowy) conditions will stay away as long as the Jet Stream remains to our north. Did have a bit of very light drizzle this week but nothing to really mention.

Wishing ALL a Marvelous Week~~~Wet Snow

Well since late Saturday, I've had a bit of a runny nose, a cough and lots of drainage into my throat. I wasn't sure what I had--until today (Mon.) I noticed some trees around town are already blooming (!) & I realized that I must have a touch of hayfever. It's only been in the last few years that I've even had episodes of hayfever and certainly never had it this early in the year--there's almost a month of Winter left!

February looks like being warmer than the previous November here, has this happened in Mena before?

It last happened in 1989 here (using the CET average series - Nov avg mean 5.2C/41.4F, Feb avg mean 5.9C/42.6F)

February warmer than March happened in 1995 (Feb mean 6.5C/43.7F, March mean 5.6C/42.1F)

February warmer than April is very rare, last time was in 1903 (Feb mean 7.1C/44.8F, April mean 6.4C/43.5F)

Late-February Greetings Friends:
Here's previous weeks' weather in Mena, Arkansas:

DATE.....HIGH.........LOW..........RAIN

........25..53F/11.6C..35F/1.6C...---
........26..62F/16.6C..32F/0.0C...---

For the week of Feb. 20-26: Mena's Avg. Max.: 56.5F/13.6C; Avg. Min.: 32.4F/0.2C. [Just to clarify: these weekly averages are Climatological, not the Actual averages for the week].
Although this week was a bit cooler-feeling than the previous one, there were still times where it felt warmish and humid. The rain was from the passage--on the 21st & 24th--of a couple Pacific cold fronts. The rain fell heavy at times on the 24th and the thunder rumbles were great to hear--Thankfully, any severe weather missed my area (as my area was under a Tornado Watch for a time). Pre-frontal gusty S/SW winds and cloudcover caused nighttime temperature rises on the 23rd & 26th. Within the past week, I've notice that some local trees are budding (playing havoc with my allergies) and the daffodils in my front yard are blooming and I'm seeing very small patches of green in local lawns (also saw a good number of robins out and about). Hard to believe that Spring is still over 3 weeks away! Quite a strange (Winter) month so far: wintry, snowy & cold to start and then--starting on the 12th--we've had 16 straight days (inc. today; Sunday) of 50F+/10C+ maximums. Overall High-12:01AM and Overall Low-abt. 11:39PM-listed for the 21st; Overall High-abt. 11:45PM-listed for the 23rd; Overall Low-abt. 11:37PM-listed for the 24th; Overall High-abt. 11:45PM-listed for the 26th.
Some possibly severe weather is forecasted for much of Arkansas later on this (Sun.) evening.
Forecast for upcoming week calls for continued above-normal temperatures with mostly sunny conditions.

Wishing ALL a Most Pleasant Week~~~Wet Snow

Quite a strange (Winter) month: From 1st-11th was very cold and snowy and from 12th-28th had maximums of 50F+/10C+. Avg. Max. for 1st-11th was 35.5F/1.9C; Avg. Max. for 12th-28th was 64.4F/18C. My 50th birthday was on the 19th and the 73F/22.7C top for that day was my warmest birthday since 1986.

Wishing ALL a Safe, Happy, Prosperous & Most Blessed Month of March~~~Wet Snow

Laredo Texas has been getting some early heat lately, up around 100F a couple of days back. That's up there with Mumbai India in terms of heat in the NH at this stage.
