Falls were patchy yesterday, but the eastern coastal strip, parts of the southern midlands and the SE are well down year to date like much of Vic/NSW/SA and QLD. Managed 10.4mm all up from the system that went through Wed/Thurs. A few places in the far south did well and some of the east coast sites got ~15mm.

Looks like only 5 or so mm at Hobart, a shame it wasn't more.

NW in for a bit of a deluge this afternoon with 20-40mm and possibly heavy falls forecast. Clear and sunny here in Devonport this morning though.

As usual, the SE will struggle to see much I assume.

Tassie needs a good low off the east coast to help the eastern side. It will happen again one day - hope it's before the dusty side blows out to sea.

Just on the Spirit of Tasmania now ready to sail. Raining pretty heavy here in Devonport. Captain says there will be some movement later!

When the curtains are 300mm+ from the wall due to roll & crew are almost crab walking, time to find a comfortable spot and try to relax!!

Bon Voyage Duane grin

Wednesday and Thursday next week looks a bit like those two days in October 2006 the eastern shore fire episode ( hot/dry air/wind )...would I be right? Very dry run-up conditions as well. I think we've got our first 30+ degree day in there.

Happy B'day BigM. Hope it's a top day.

Yes, next week looks rather warm, Hobart's forecast of 20, 21, 22, 27 and 28 from Sat-Wed is a pretty warm run for October. Will have to check what the longest run of +20 days is for Oct.

We wound up with 23.6mm last night. Just pipped May 28th to be the 2nd wettest day of the year, but well behind the 36.6mm on May 21st.

Thanks Yep & Dan grin

Hope duane made it across the briny ok smile

Dan - the boys down south would be hanging out for your rain numbers!!

Hope the fires don't eventuate. No fun at all. Too much dry vegetation down south is a big concern. Fingers crossed.

Wish we could ALL get a proper DRENCHING!! We had showers last night - actually up to about 20mm for the mtd - been a very long time since I could say that.

Maybe we are getting little bits of rain - hopefully Hobart will soon too.

A bit of investigation. Five days in a row over 20 in October isn't especially rare, but there's never been more than six in a row. Five or more +20 days has occurred ten times, but only once since 1977 - that was just two 2 years ago. Of those ten occasions with five day runs, on 4 of them the run extended to 6. The current forecast is unlikely to extend to a 6th based on the current forecast unless there is a early max on the 6th day.

The October of 2015 was warm, it included 11 days over 20, with 2 days over 31, 2 of 29 and 2 of 26. 11 days over 20 hadn't happened since 1963. This upcoming warm spell is unlikely to reach the highs of 2015.

As recently as 1976, Hobart recorded 0 days over 20 in an October. Three days in 2009 is the lowest since 2000.

There have been 13 October's with ten or more days +20. Only twice has there been 12 days over 20 in October. Never more than 12.

As of today, Hobart has reached 20 four times, could easily be another October with more than ten, 20 degree days. Would have ~12 days to get 3 more +20 days to equal the record.

Might be close to a 30, depends on how much the uppers cool after lunch on Wednesday or whether it can reach 30 before lunch. 850TMPs drop from 15 to -4 in two days. Anyway, might be breezy as well, so hopefully no fires.
