WOW that's an extreme rainfall event for Hobart. Looks like QLD tropical downpour. Stay safe.

Incredible training line of thunderstorms with focused convergence wrapping into the low, more cells forming offshore in the warmer unstable air off the Tasman. Orographic lift from Mt.Wellington probably assisting this as well. This is a very serious setup and if anymore training like this occurs the damage will only get worse flooding wise and it's already very bad, some of the footage of cars floating away is pretty mind boggling.

TS cool

Was just about to post the leslie vale fall...that is truly utterly insane. Hope you get through this alright, smashing the record books at this point. A genuinely dangerous system.

Yep never seen anything like this before, just insane!
My lovely wife did an amazing job sandbagging and diverting waters till I got home at 12.50am.
15,000 houses without power.
Will go and do Obs at 3am for the Bom.

Sorry to here mate.
Not been much fun!
Will have to move all of my offices and clean out the whole shed and was the mud out. Small amount of stuff damaged like carpet and the like plus all the storm waster pipes now blocked with the nursery gravel.

Jeepers SF, 222mm that's insane. Hope the damage to the nursery isn't too severe, but guessing there is a bit.

4th wettest Hobart day of all time, may still be the 3rd wettest yet.

I assume SF is the official Bureau observing site at Leslie Vale? The 226.4 reported there is the 3rd highest daily total on record for May in Tasmania (with the 236.2 at Mount Wellington being the second).

That is correct Blair, SF is the BOM site at Leslie Vale (well he reads the rain gauge, he may not be the site per se)

Are there any flood-level indicators (i.e. poles with 1 m, 2 m, etc. marked on them) in the area of Hobart affected by this event?

Not that I am aware of. The rivulet spilt over at the lower end of Collins Street. I think there is a marker on the wall of the rivulet at that location from the bottom of the rivulet up to the street/footpath level. Its not high profile. My dimensions might be way off but I think the rivulet would be about 10m wide at that point and about 3m deep. It runs underground through most of the city. I am not aware of any marker above street level. Often rivulet is completely dry, on very rare occasions they will sandbag in case of overflow, overflow has only happened a couple times in last 20-30 years I am aware of, but nothing like this. I am pretty sure there was no sandbagging this time but doubt that would have been enough to stop the torrent.

Yes Blair been the observer for Kingston since 1996 when I was 16 or 17 then I left Home and left the old man in charge when I got married! Then started second Kingston gauge at Cadeís Drive for 2 Years. Then closed that site and started Leslie Vale site on the other side of the hill from Cadeís Drive. Been doing it here since December 2005 and still current.
