Im not clued in on the MSLP markings ? (if that is what they are) you know the little lines making circles within circles thingys but could someone with the nouse to do so give us an indication of the area we could expect to see destructive winds just going on the models at this stage.

I know it's all up in the air so to speak so far (no pun intended) but a rough guide to what we could expect area wise according to what is indicated so far would be good, just to give a heads up to those in the expected outlying areas.

Thanks in advance for those who know this stuff. smile

I don't want to talk about the potential destruction from a Cat 5 system - it disturbs me.

You can get a bit of an idea from history:-

I know this sounds stupid.... but is there any chance this thing heading south.. ie Bris Vegas... I am leaving for overseas next week and have the opportunity to push dates back.... just dont want to leave the brand new house by itself if it comes down.... it might get scared!

Chookie- EC ( the model favoured by BOM and most of the expert nuts in here) have been persistant of the same crossing for the past couple of days now. Considering that they forecast this system to impact QLD's coast around this coming Wednesday/ Thursday- they surely must have a certain degree of confidence of they are predicitng the crossing in the same area.

Thats kind of what I was wondering. The upper level conditions will always change, so it wont be exact, though it could be pretty similar. Like if this ridge dissipates before he comes through, he probably wont end up heading SW, just straight West right into Port Douglas. Who knows ..

Before I went out for dinner I was looking at it, could see some moisture feeding in but it was small at that stage. Now I come back and it's grown like crazy! Really interesting system there, with a lot of moisture feeding into it!

There is some scientific reasoning there Seventh Storm. As a tropical cyclone tracks over sea, because of the constant and deep cloud cover, it somewhat reduces the SST over the area it travels. Although Anthony was never a broad/deep cyclone, the SST anomalies where Anthony has been is a little cooler.

Link.

Dont forget that this system will be gathering energy from a much wider area and will have more favourable conditions than Ant ever had as well tho, shear looks great for development and SST's are more than enough to sustain anything that gets it's Jiggy on.

It is more likely to hit the Central Queensland or North Coast...but it is possible for it to hit as far south as Brisbane...all depends on the strength of the system and how the steering factors in play influence it.

More likely we will have rain and that is all.

Down south around Brisbane should be okay you don't have to worry about it at the moment.

Say cool and say high for at the moment.

We got to give you some good news to them all.

We got to give you some fine weather down there.

If the ridge disappates the cyclone will most likely move further south... If it stregthens the track is further north...

Edit: Nitso stated that if the system is intense... more so what is forecast or it becomes intense earlier then forecast it's likely to be steered more SW likewise if it's weaker further WNW.

Ahh good one Mick10 for getting this thread up and running. I think everyone knows that this system is the one to watch especially if the EC model is to go by. It should enter Australia's waters as a decent established system that will only intensify right into the coast. Australia might have survived the Global finacial crisis relatively unscathed but if this hits a major populated area I reckon Australia will be paying the price for months to come. Lets hope it hits somewhere isolated (is there anywhere isolated in QLD).

Good luck.

WE are already paying the price over this way Popeye due to the recent floods but if this thing comes in as a Cat 4 -5 sadly will just be the Nail in the coffin so to speak.

Squeako, is there any model guidance then, as to what that ridge is likely to do?

Off the back of the floods too...

I am wondering if the system could cause another Flood Event of the same or similar levels...I cannot imagine how people will respond to another Lockyer Valley, Ipswich and Brisbane flood...not that they were the only places affected of course, just I am in Brisbane on the river so saw it first hand.

Models have the ridge quite strong so a WSW movement. Most models guidance have areas Between Cairns-Mackay as a likely crossing point at this stage.
