Snow has just about all melted at Black Mountain. Just a few patches in the shade. About 6/8 cloud cover. No vertical development in clouds. Temperature -0.5degC, but doesn't look like enough moisture in the air for any precipitation.

Hope the snow chasers enjoyed it while it lasted. Perhaps there's one more left before summer.

Great photos SnowBM and Bravo Brad.
Has anyone got any Guyra snow photos? I need a good one to put on my Guyra website.

As usual Armidale missed out in this event. All we had were showers and cold winds.

Jason Paterson and I headed up to the Northern Tablelands leaving Lismore at 3.30pm yesterday. The first sleet shower occurred along Inn Road into Ben Lomond about 7pm with some more into Guyra but the temp was still mostly above 2 so not many proper snow flakes were observed. We hunted around for more but only encountered frozen drizzle and sleet.

Had a rest then headed out again between 1 and 3am today. Showers of precipitation were fairly frequent but still mainly frozen drizzle and sleet around. Some wet snow was found at Black Mountain with some light settling there. There was no settling around Ben Lomond at this stage.

These at Black Mountain:

The precip eased again so went back to Guyra for a couple of hours. Dawn showed some snow has fallen in town so headed out again for a proper look. Snow showers persisted for a while. Black Mountain appeared to have the best with a 1 to 1.5cm cover (measured) with drifts 2-3cm in favourable locations.

Black Mountain:

South Guyra picked up more than the rest of town but it was only 0.5 to 1cm cover. It can look more on lawns but it was barely covering things.

Later in the morning we went to Ben Lomond and found some areas that had received 1-2cm but it was patchy. Some drifts/clumping of about 3cm were found.

Ben Lomond:

So Guyra didn't do too well this time with Black Mountain the pick of the region. Ben Lomond saved face with some decent early morning snow, though patchy and not the best in the village itself.

There is some variation as to what others reported as to the cover - can only report what we observed.

CrackinHalf, Round Mountain must get some nice snowfalls sometimes. The Range is called Snowy Mountain Range. I wonder how Ebor was
in the July 1984 snow event.

Thanks SnowBM the pics, love the gum trees up the the NT.

Thanks Bravo Brad, for the pics, i was wonder how Ben Lomond fared, yes Black Mountain did the best this time.

Snowstruck, sadly that is it, but who knows, might be another surprise before spring ends.

Michael, thanks for the pics and report

Nice pics Michael and others. The NT can look so bleak.

The cold pool coming across the NT tomorrow looks just a tad too warm to produce snow, even at Ben Lomond or Black Mountain. Both ACCESS-R and GFS have a centre of around -26 moving W->E over Armidale about 5pm tomorrow, but surrounded by a very broad area of -24. 850 temps are around 2 to 3, and there is a blob of reasonable instability accompanying the pool (~54 tot tots), but moisture isn't great. The forecast sounding [here] for Guyra at 7pm is the best it gets with freezing level at 1960m and a bit of moisture and instability in the bottom few hundred metres that might produce showers from shallow cumulus. The time of day isn't great for temperature, but it's still possible given the instability generated by the centre of the cold pool, and the usual melting effect, that there might be some snow on the higher parts. Neither US nor ACCESS-R models are going for any precip on the NT.

Saturday morning at about 1 - 2am we had very mixed rain ice showers even a possible flake or two. I thought we may have got some snow out of it but the cloud cover was to patchy. My house is at 1049m asl here on south hill in Armidale. Missed out again but it was a really decent cold snap made us feel "alive" again.

Hi Mickey, welcome ot the forum, nice to have someone else from the NT to report.

Hi Laurier,
Thanks for the input. I had a look also.

850 temps are around 0 on the sounding, though around the time of the RH, from Bsch site around 1 tp 2c, if i read the souding correctly.

Gday All,

Just a few more to add to MB's awesome report and pics. Most of mine are from around the Black Mountain area.

It was pretty satisfying to see some snow up around the usual haunts of Guyra, Ben Lomond and Black Mountain after poring over the models for several days in the leadup. This was our second chase up there this year and this time we managed to come away with the goods even though the cover wasn't as significant as some models were forecasting. Got home at 5pm Saturday after leaving Lismore at 330pm Friday.....950km later ( tied in a side trip down the Old Grafton Road on the way home) and only about 4hrs sleep!! Suffice to say I was a tad weary but it was well worth the effort. Thanks to Michael for his company...its always enjoyable to share events like this with mates. Full set of pics can be found here

Cheers Jason

Thought I'd bump this thread now...Inverell (650m) just dropped from 13C to 6C (with 5mm also) from that shower/storm that just moved over.

Applethorpe had the same temp drop (and 2mm) from the northern end of that shower/storm line also

Hi Dave -- you were right this morning: we have SNOW on the ground. It's really a mixture of pea-sized hail, slushly snow and sago snow. Nevertheless, the ground is white.
Just drove down town very, very slowly as the roads are indeed very slippery.
Started with a few thunder rumbles and then heaps of hail/snow mixture.

Black Mountain got some sago snow about the same time, but nowhere near what's been reported for Guyra. It looked very black up towards Guyra, so I guess the storm cell passed to the north of Black Mountain. Nevertheless, amongst the fine sago snow, were some snow flakes. They are always easy to see against a dark background, because they come down at a shallower angle than the sago snow or rain.

Current Black Mountain temperature 4degC.

It certainly did get black and dark, SnowBM. The snow/hail is melting a bit but there's still some on cars, the footpaths and roofs.
Radar looks promising for more to come. Temperature has fallen again (did have a little rise). Now 2.6 with -2.8 wind chill. Barometer 1004.7 hPa, westerly wind of 27kph. We've had 5.6mm of precipitation.

Thanks guys!

A friend of mine who grew up in Ben Lomond (and family still lives there) just told me they have snow there also.

I'm sure for just a few minutes there was some sleet amongst the rain shortly after 4pm. Had a few icy drops fall on my jumper...

What in the world, 1.3deg at Armidale airport not long ago at 3:42pm!!!, must be snow there somewhere?.
What is happening Snow Gypsy?, noticed your temp did not get quite that low?
Just a balmy 3.2 and rain down here.

I agree PD, I reckon there would've had to been some snow flurries at the airport, and around the highest parts of South Armidale. In hindsight, probably should have gone for a quick drive up to the airport when the temp was hovering around that 1.5 mark! frown

The next line of precipitation is lining up well for Guyra and Black Mountain.

BTW, looks like the low has found the ocean off the coast near Forster/Tuncurry?

Now 1.5degC at Black Mountain. Reasonable snow shower around 4pm, but not settling. Beans in the vege garden are looking very uncomfortable!
