The airport site is relatively new, the town site at the Post Office has digitized records back to 1950 ish. The Post Office recorded 49.1c in Feb 1998....probably the same heat wave that produced the 50.5c at Mardie.

Roebourne 48.0C before midday - am I excited? No, little doubt the seabreeze will kill off the heat in the next hour or so...

Well well - 49.2C now, Roebourne's hottest ever January or February temperature...

Outstanding ! Particularly given how late in the season....I was in Roebourne ( well Wickham actually which is 10klm away ) in Dec 2011 when we recorded 49.4c.....fair dinkum one struggled to breath in that temperature. For the weather freak, just to experience a near 50c is a must ! Truly indescribably friggen' hot ! !

The Roebourne reading equals the latest date in summer on which 49 has been reached in Australia (also happened at Emu Creek on 21 February 1998, as part of the same heatwave in which Mardie had got its 50.5 a couple of days earlier). The latest 48 also occurred in the 1998 heatwave, at Learmonth on 24 February.

Wittenoom's minimum on Saturday, 35.1, was also an Australian record for February.

I thought I'd get this thread up and running again. This year may well be the year which will see 50. The Pilbara has seen a warm October, and is set to have another hot spell ahead. Marble Bar broke its october monthly maximum record, and may brake its daily maximum record of 46c on the weekend. Its still at least a month until a real shot at 50c yet though.

Wow I had no idea that temps were that hot up there already. Usually the most likely stations to be in the running for 50 are places like Roebourne, Mardie and Shays Gap

Yeah WR, it looks to be the warm Indian ocean and weak shear allowing heat to build, although I'm not an expert. The coastal areas haven't heated up as much yet but they would be the most likely stations to record 50c.
And also, central Australia is set to climb to the mid 40s by late next week.

That sounds like a pretty good assumption as to why there's so much heat. I'd say the weak shear would definitely be heating things up. It would also be the reason why coastal stations haven't heated up as much. I'd say the warm Indian Ocean would also mean that the rainy season would probably start earlier, possibly leading to a narrower window of opportunity for the big 5-0 than usual?

Anyone know what happened with the Marble Bar station this month?

They had a cracking run of heat in October and then no data? I hope it is a communication issue and the data is there ...
But I suspect the data is lost forever and now historical data is incomplete making the statistics a bit rubbish. Shame.

WR youd've thought so, but I checked Darwin, Marble Bar and Broome's rainfall for the seasons Marble Bar had their hottest days(although other locations in the area may had had other different hot days), but to my surprise there seemed to be no correlation between the monsoon and Marble bar's highest temperatures over the last 50 years. The only correlation was that marble bar never had any rain in the week prior to the hottest day.

Kizz, that region cooled off at the beginning of this month so no records could have been broken anyway I suspect. It still would have been interesting to see the average max at the end of the month though.

btw Marble Bar hit 45c today

Interesting stuff rainiac. Particularly the correlation between lack of rainfall and hottest temps.

And yeah kizz it is a shame about the data. But as rainiac said, no records have probably been broken in that time. However it is a problem since the averages wouldn't be right. They would probably be skewed higher than the actual average would be if we had all the data.

Which is exactly my point. I'm not bothered if any records were broken or not. However, the stats for November, the year 2015 and the 2015/16 Summer are incomplete and therefore unusable in terms of reliable metrics etc.

Kuri Bay forecast for 48 on Monday, not sure about the accuracy of that though with the station being closed in 2012.

Looks like an equal record with 1961 and 1986 (both of which were also at Marble Bar, at the old site). The record for any month is 44.9 at Marble Bar in February 2007.

Well there haven't been many days close to 50 this season in Aus. The closest was 47.2 at marble bar in early January. Looks like this is it for the season unless theres a late burst of heat.

That would have to be the lowest seasonal extreme for years.

I thought El Niņo years were known for their extreme maximum temperatures?
