Maybe we have it wrong with this thread. If we rename it "When will we see 51C in Australia"? Or maybe "Where?"

The Oodnadatta 50.7 and 50.3 in January 1960 were on successive days. (Considering some of the other temperatures in this event - 49.4 at Whyalla is a standout - it was perhaps a bit of a surprise that Marree didn't make 50).

The only other 50+ values in Australia under standard conditions are the 50.5 at Mardie in February 1998 as mentioned earlier, and 50.0 at Wilcannia in January 1939. (The daily data from Wilcannia in 1939 haven't been digitised, so this value doesn't get picked up in some lists but we believe it to be accurate; a 49.7 from Menindee is pretty strong backup).

I think that it won't be long before another 50 is recorded, we've had a few close calls but surely it'll tip over sooner or later, just need the right dry arid conditions for it

Hottest I've ever experienced was 45 a few years ago

I remember it being 47C here on Black Saturday. Incredible how heat like that could be pushed this far south.

Yes - how on earth did Marree not at LEAST get to 50C in that 1960 event with it being 60n lower then Oodnadatta!!?

Without knowing whether there exists observations of the sky I am guessing cloud could be a factor robbing Marree of a 50 or two.

That's generally what happens in our part of the world, but we get robbed of 40 degree temps.

Seems like a bit of an anomaly? this is the second time this year that i have noticed a temp of 50 deg on the weatherzone page?

New Summer. New round of watching out for 50.

While nowhere near the 55.4 at Lucinda Point, the heat in the north west is certainly one to get my attention.

47.4 at Marble Bar on the 8th is definitely up there.
Forecast is for mid forties every day for the next week.
Hoping the planets align to sling shot some of that my way.

OCF going for 49 at Marble Bar on Boxing Day, which is Almost the record there in over 100yrs(record 49.2c in Jan 1922). Will be one to watch.

Some models showing 850t in 34-35c range which is about as hot as it gets here in Aus.

I have seen 49c forecast quite a few times for Marble Bar in the last 10 years or so...... rarely does it come off. And that slight bit of altitude cruels the attempt of a 50c at that location. Those extreme 850t's need to fall on the coastal Pilbara lowlands ie Roebourne, Mardie and Onslow.
Marble Bar reaches into the 48's easily enough it seems, but to crack 49c is very rare and has not occurred in December. Dec record at the newish site was 48.4c on 21/12/11....BTW I was in Roebourne/Wickham that day, 49c at the Airport and 49.4c at the Post Office. Was too hot even for the flies....

Looks like Roebourne might be the most likely place to nudge 50C on Thursday with a solid core of 32C at 850hpa above them. Wont get my hopes up though, so many times in the past its never quite got there, perhaps if the sea breeze stays away for the afternoon it could happen...

Do you mean Pannawonica? BOM has 49C pencilled in for tomorrow at this stage? Marble Bar 49C forecast today as well!
I was there the day back in the 80's when Port Hedland 48.8C I can tell you there wasn't a heap of work done that day I remember being doused with the fire hoses many times that day!

Edit Reason: added Marble Bar

Nah Pannawonica and Marble Bar who are around that 200m asl mark so in my opinion not going to crack 50C, the perfect places are Mardie, Roebourne etc which are slightly inland but not at any elevation, in fact Mardie is probably the most likely spot of all! If it does get above 50C it will join Oodnadatta as not only the only places to get to 50C but to do it on 2 seperate occasions...

There are no temperature observations at Pannawonica these days. Agree that if it's going to happen it will be at one of the near-coastal sites (Roebourne, Mardie, maybe Onslow) - depends on sea breezes.

Well I guess we will wait with baited breath to see the obs for the next couple of days. Shame Pannawonica doesn't have any obs anymore. Guess we can't have weather stations everywhere. Agree with Blair sea breezes in the Pilbara will influence if we break any records. It would be the difference between very hot or hot and sticky (speaking from personal experience)

Any chance of breaking the record for the hottest December day averaged across the country or a state, during this heatwave?
