Not currently forecast for maximum temperature but is for daily mean temperature. (The maximum temperature record from December 1972 - which was also the all-months record until broken in 2013 - is tough).

Already 40.9 at Marble Bar by 8am, and a minimum of 33.7 at Karijini North (the new AWS intended to replace Wittenoom). Wittenoom has a history of extreme high minimum temperatures and the Karijini North AWS was deliberately sited to match the topographic setting of Wittenoom (near the outlet of a gorge) as closely as possible. Seems to be working, with katabatic winds coming out of the gorge - last night they were sustained all night, the previous two nights you can see the temperature jump from high 20s to mid 30s for a period as SSW winds develop.

41.9c now at 8:19am. I think Marble Bar would be the last place in Australia i'd think about living at.

44C at 9am for Marble Bar, never seen that before...currently running at 1-1.5C higher then the data was suggesting, could be in for something special today...

From memory I think the highest 9am temperature on record in Australia is in the 45s.

48.2 so far at Marble Bar, and seems to be struggling to get much higher.

Looks like 48.5 unless a late spike occurs before the day is done.

I recall reading a Weather Underground article about the Death Valley heat. Seems there is a maximum potential heat in the atmosphere that is reached by very early afternoon.
The article says that with the extreme heat there is plenty of mixing and if the temperature stays steady all afternoon it indicates that the full height of the atmosphere (troposphere) is mixed and that is pretty much the maximum temperature of the atmosphere all things being equal.

There is a lot of emphasis on upper highs and descending air when the North America south west gets their extreme heat events. I'm not sure what factors are different for tropical locales such as the Kimberley and Pilbara.

Karijini North was at it again last night - dipped to 31.9 around 11pm but then was around 36-38 for most of the rest of the night once the outflow winds from the gorge got going. Up over 40 before 8am.

Roebourne now taking the lead at 47.2C, it was always going to be the case that Roebourne was more likely at sea level to record the higher temp then Marble Bar...

Sea breeze looks like its in @ Roebourne topped out @ 48.9C I don't think it will go up any more than that unless it turns around again..

Agreed. Onslow could be the sleeper; 47.4 and no sign of a seabreeze yet.

I'd only just registered that the old manual site at Emu Creek (near the Nanutarra Roadhouse) stopped reporting in April.
