Ok, these are my 1st attempts of taking any kind of decent picture with my new camera...

Theyre not great by some of the standards seen on here and apologies if you think they're cluttering the board up, but they're by far the best pics ive taken in a while after having used a iphone camera for so long!! So feeling very happy ive caught my first ever CG on a still not video footage! smile

I'm still trying to figure out how to get the best settings for different lighting etc but hopefully this will improve with time! Hope you like them smile

Nice going 4 1st's StevefromSurfers, better than a lot of my early lightning captures, over exposed theywere, A total No No for lightning IMO : ) Yours are Great, ! Can only keep experimenting as Different Storm intensities, Lightning proximity, Lens being used, ect ect, all play a part, so there is no one good setting, strange at it sounds ? You have done well, put down to experience and keep at it, Thumbs up !

really? i never submitted anything, are you sure it was mine, AC (Anthony Cornelius) was about 25m away when we were in that hail storm, so it couldv'e been his footage, he submits his footage all the time to ch 7 too. let me know either way. do you have a link where i could watch it? smile

what a great day...again! went out with jeff offshore on his jetski in search for waterspouts, we saw one just before we went on the water then when we got out there we saw a massive waterspout towards point lookout! probably the one posted here earlier smile

other than that there were a few prongs here and there but nothing really. so instead we were wave jumping with the storm in the background, stacked it once when a 1.5m wave broke on us, luckily we were wearing life jackets haha

met up with andy, cam and jess and we stayed around the seaway for a few hours then heading down to point danger where we got some bolts grin

some super awesome structure before sunset too! just going through pics now and ill upload later tonight.

i knew i shouldve gone out at 4am to get those bolts, just thought it was too far away compared to the stuff a few hours earlier but great work pulmbbob smile was that photo taken at the southport SLSC?

As promised here are some pics from todays action. Noticed a cell creeping towards the coast at Ballina, this is what it looked like at South Lismore

With one last check of the radar I bundled the kids and camera gear in the car and headed off to a lookout at Ballina to try my luck. As mentioned before the cell was sitting about 30km offshore and the bolts were infrequent so it was hard to know where to point the camera at times. Anyway here's the best of them

Spewing this one blew out....there were a few others like this. There is some ghosting of the sensor that you can see that might indicate what the bolt may have looked like.

Hope you enjoy

Cheers Jason

Wow, what a blast these last 3 days. As much fun as it has been watching this event un fold in real life, it has been just as much fun watching it come to life on this forum, and to see it from all different areas.
Fantastic photos all, thanks for sharing,

Here is one from pt danger this eve, will share more tomorrow, I was lucky enough to see a couple of water spouts near straddle , it was along way away but u can still make them out on video, I was at pt danger. Will post tomorrow, cheers.

this is the first time ive really done this so lets see how it goes smile

well we currently have a surface low of the northern NSW coast off Coffs. this surface low is forecast to move NW towards SEQ from now and will weaken once it gets past the gold coast and practically gone by this time tomorrow.

there is already a shower band moving up the NSW coast and is heading towards SEQ because the surface low is coming up here!

this low should be off the coast of lismore around 10am and just south of point lookout by mid arvo. this should turn winds more onshore once it get further north but itll be pretty weak by then and shouldnt really affect us for a prolonged period of time smile

should get some gusty winds and showers tomorrow, could pick up a few mm here and there, coastal fringe should have higher totals than the west though.

well that is my forecast for today, lets see if this pans out, could be a showery wednesday....

ps. met your brother at the seaway this arvo too joesk smile

What an extraordinary few days. A few things I thought I'd mention regarding the photogenicity (is there such a word?) of these storms. Those of you who have been nearer the coast may not have appreciated this quite as much because you've been running around underneath them but I've been looking at them mostly at a distance driving to and from Gatton, Ipswich and Kalbar. For those of you whose preference is lightning bolts just excuse me getting a bit arty-farty for a minute. Has anyone ever seen more beautiful-looking storms? So different to the classical chunkiness and crisp edges of hot summers day storms. For those who think that SteveMack spent 3 hours on photoshop with that picture above, think again (stunning pic Steve). I'm sure he gave it a bit of a contrast tweak but the point is, the colours and structure have been breathtaking by themselves. No photo could really do them justice. Strange formations, wispy bent anvils and weird mammatus combined with deep blues and greys and soft pinks and oranges. What a show!! I presume that part of this is the softer light and lower angle of the sun in the sky at this time of year. It reminded me of the beautiful soft light available for scenery shots in northern Europe. So needed my camera on Monday arvo and thought, "Well that can't happen again". Of course it did. Oh well.

Thankyou all for feeding my habit with your pics. Special mention to Schummy for the big dopey grin with his hands in the ice. And for all you old stormchasing hardheads, Can anyone ever recall 3 consecutive days of over land thunderstorms in SEQ in May?(actually 4, if you count the ripper over Stradbroke Island on Saturday night) I certainly can't remember that ever happening before although I'm older than most of you so my failing memory could be kicking in. Seriously, I'd like all your opinions about that last question. Keep safe

Neil

Can I also just add that according to my latest count we have had SIX hailstorm event days in FIVE WEEKS. That's incredible for May and coming on the back of that extraordinary La Nina/rainfall/flooding in the "proper storm season" I reckon this might go down in the books as one of the all-time greatest wet/storm seasons.

It might be worth putting it out there what I observed last Saturday morning very early just after dawn. Travelling from Toowoomba to Boonah via Rosewood. I saw a couple of columns piling up out of the rather bland horizontal layer of cloud over Brisbane. Was in a hurry otherwise it was remarkable enough to have taken a picture. After a while the pile on one disconnected with the horizontal layer and hung around aloft of the horizontal layer. The morning dawn back lit this orphan. It was a great example of nature putting on a show just for me it seemed. Thought there might then eventuate some activity so in effect this latest show went back at least to Sat morn early.
