Close Cg strike photo - Christmas Eve, Sunshine Coast - 28/01/2003 21:56

Evening all

I was sent these photos from a guy by the name of David Keffyn. They were taken from Golden Beach (Caloundra) on the Sunshine Coast, north of Brisbane, on Christmas Eve 2002. As you can see the Cg in the first photo is incredibly close! His description is below

"I had the camera on the tripod on open exposure, it is a shear fluke that I got it on camera. It was so close it threw my Missus off the balcony back into the apartment, and it singed some of the hair on my arm and slightly knocked the wind from me. It was darn close, a little too close actually, but fun none the same smile "

An amazing photo! And believe it or not, he kept shooting

That first one is very close too!

GREAT PHOTOS, although a little too close i think.
2 questions, in the first photo are there balls of something looking like they are travelling towards the strike? and secondly, is that pine tree in the first photo, the one closest to the strike bending away from it or was it naturally like that?

HOLY <....>

Did he say what the sound was like? I'd imagine deafening.

With these lightning pics, can you just take it with a normal camera, or do you need something which keeps the shutter open for a period of seconds?

Id think it'd be extremely loud, I remember lightning hit about 500m from me one time, and the crack left a ringing in my ears for 10mins afterwards. I reccon he's lucky not to have burst eardrums laugh

A little too close for comfort, yes wink

Not sure about the balls Bigwilly but that pine tree looks the same in both the first and second photos so i assume it's grown that way.

He didn't actually mention anything about the thunder - i asked him in my reply. All the close strikes (say <50m) i've encountered though have had more of a short sharp whip crack type thunder.

Great stuff Bodie!! I've used the first one as the background on my PC - the flash on the left just contains all my icons nicely. Looks like it was made for it! :nerd:

keep it up (if you dare!)

WOW GREAT PIC'S !!!!!! eek eek eek
Nice to see what happens at the other end of Bribie Island ( the land in the background to the right of the pic's ) That night was some terrific lightning but just passed us to the Caloundra end of Bribie.
Far tooooo close for comfort though, hope they were ok afterwards. When I've had a close call the noise is very sharp crack like someone cracking a stockwhip right close to your ears.
