WA Kimberley and Pilbara Wet Season - January 2014 - 03/01/2014 03:30

May as well start off the WA NWest Thread for Jan. Looks like it should be an active period for the Nwest with possible Monsoons and TC's forecast.

Went out on a quick chase on the plains tonight with Orebound. Watched a sweet storm roll across the inland area. Managed to score a couple of nice pics.

Got to see the TC Christine footage and pics. Scarey stuff. Point Sampson/Wickham/Roebourne looked pretty messed up. Should be some good footage out soon.

A pic from the plains tonight.

Awesome pic Popeye. The rain this season has been welcomed with open arms. Looking forward to getting some more monsoonal weather in the next couple of months before the dreaded DRY creeps up on us again. As for the TC's, nothing around Jan 27 please! I would like to make it to my holiday destination smile

Re: WA Kimberley and Pilbara Wet Season - January 2014 - 04/01/2014 15:31

Yeah cheers Zobubble. Last night went off apparently out on the plains again but I couldn't drag myself off the floor after the hangover from hell from the after chase drinking session with Orebound. lol. Need to gain abit of form if he comes back through town. It does seem likely that the Nwest will fire again soon. I cant wait. Learnt a heap about lightning photography the other night. Cant wait for the next round of storms.

Re: WA Kimberley and Pilbara Wet Season - January 2014 - 04/01/2014 16:00

Yes the plains certainly turned it on again last night to the point where we were treated to the spectacle of a relatively rare TLE show. Discreet clean cell well to the east began discharging beautiful Blue Jets high into a crystal clear sky above the storm anvil. Missed the first couple so wound up the ISO in an attempt to capture one and after a period of savage CG discharges the cell fired off another 5 or 6 Jets which I was fortunate enough to capture.

When I get home I will enhance the photos a bit to bring out the colour but you get the idea. Image is obviously noisy due to high ISO causing a few hot pixels etc.

That's bizarre looking. Awesome capture Orebound. Wish I had of got out for some photos. Would love to have seen something so rare like that. Looks like Broome delivers the goods again lol. Told you so. haha. Almost looks like a comet behind the storm at first glance.

Re: WA Kimberley and Pilbara Wet Season - January 2014 - 04/01/2014 19:26

What can I say??? Mother [censored]!!! LMFAO! laugh Awesome stuff mate, VERY rare to capture a BJ!(I can go into detail why later). Hats off to you though, you have joined a VERY exclusive club that's for sure, capture numbers of these events from terrestrial observations would be 100's or less, (D)SLR captures would be even lower again!!!

Poor suckers like me chase this stuff around all of our lives and here you go nailing several at once, none the less just "holidaying" while returning home from a cyclone chase that you nailed too. cry woe with me... grin

My condolences Popeye, ya finally get around to putting up an image and here go's OB showing you up, BIG TIME! LOL! poke

Re: WA Kimberley and Pilbara Wet Season - January 2014 - 04/01/2014 20:38

Cheers guys, certainly an event I won't soon forget. Unfortunately no photograph will ever truly show the magnificence of what we witnessed. Luminescent spraying of vivid blue light high into the upper atmosphere certainly left the jaw dropping on the ground. I have seen no shortage of extremely aggressive thunderstorms in recent times but no amount of lightning activity will ever match the beauty of the TLE.

Looking forward to getting the images to Photoshop to clean then up. It appears we have 7 separate images including a couple of "blue starters"

In the meantime, here is a zoomed image of the same storm prior to it throwing up fresh heads and putting on the TLE show.

Re: WA Kimberley and Pilbara Wet Season - January 2014 - 04/01/2014 21:30

Wow the images you guys have posted are truly awesome! Taking pictures of storms is what started my lunacy, also helped me to not be totally utterly terrified of storms! Now I get dragged inside when there just overhead!

Unfortunately my pictures are not even close to being as impressive as the ones here! And storms are becoming a rarity, however being windy is generally a given! Well done and if these pictures donít do the storms justice then they must have been incredible!

The blue Jet blew me away, that would be amazing to have witnessed, but to capture it, magnificent effort!

Re: WA Kimberley and Pilbara Wet Season - January 2014 - 04/01/2014 22:39

Thanks PW but as far as lightning photography goes I'm seriously not in the league of many of the photographers out there, well and truly still learning.

Here is one more before bed anyway, was a lovely clear night surrounding isolated storms as you can see.

Bugger wish I went down the Mangrove to join you Jason. That looks a lot nicer than the stuff we had the night before. Waiting now for more storms lol. Clear as out tonight.

Roadtrain crawler.

Nothing beats a 52metre roadtrain rushing past at 110km/hr in the dark. Love it.

Hi guys, any thoughts on where the next low will pop up ? Talk around town is mid January we could be up for another blow, I've got 90 signs to go back up and have to make a decision.
Great pics boys, I sure do miss broome ( previously Broometime)

Re: WA Kimberley and Pilbara Wet Season - January 2014 - 05/01/2014 17:18

Hey KGirl. Models are still toying with the idea of this NT system moving across. You would think in a normal set up it would come over west but you just can never guess really. If anything it will be 12 days away if it does eventuate in WA waters and not NT/QLD waters. No doubt it would take a while to get your signs back out but it depends on the business you can raise in that time and what the negative is if they are not out. I would throw them out and if it turns out you have to take them back down then so be it. Good luck. Stonker here in Brooome today. Up over 40 and its just plain ole hot.

Re: WA Kimberley and Pilbara Wet Season - January 2014 - 14/01/2014 22:40

Storm front approaching Broome is over 200kms long. Might put the glass (bottle) of wine on hold and go for a quick chase. Should be good. I hate it how the Broome radar goes down for windfinding. Right when all the good stuff comes in.

Re: WA Kimberley and Pilbara Wet Season - January 2014 - 19/01/2014 16:07

GFS keen on a CYCLONE late next week, EC and BOM keen on a LOW in Pilbara area during same time frame.

My money is on possible start in GOC / overland Kimberely, popping out near Broome (and giving them more rain/storms) heading out to sea and rapidly intensifying, but peaking at only cat3, low end cat4 max. Then crossing between the usual Pardoo to Onslow area.

Discuss?! smile

Either way, looking forward to a weather watching week rain wise, perhaps more whether it will actually come through than actual weather haha

That low is bringing some great rainfall to inland areas. Looks awesome on hedland radar.

Sounds good Leelee. Did you guys get any rain down Karrachi way. Been constant 20-30knts + here in Broome for almost 3-4 days. Crappy weather. Might get a few more showers out of this last system before it clears way for the next one this weekend. Active period which is nice.

Unbelievable rain here in Broome tonight pouring down.

Re: WA Kimberley and Pilbara Wet Season - January 2014 - 22/01/2014 03:32

Yeah Broome has nailed it tonight. Heavy continuous rain now for a few hours. Totals are going to climb really fast if this keeps up. It just seems to be feeding in off the ocean and keeps building in behind it. Love it. I hope we can crack the 100mm. I don't want to jinx it but I think we can go even more. Yehahh.

Re: WA Kimberley and Pilbara Wet Season - January 2014 - 22/01/2014 03:47

97.6mm and its still going.

Hit the 100mm. Time for a shower under the roof. Where's the sambucca. lol

Re: WA Kimberley and Pilbara Wet Season - January 2014 - 22/01/2014 04:05

It is incredible Popeye! The frogs are going nuts but I can barely hearing them over that roaring downpour. There's a river flowing underneath my house. Even gumboots wouldn't keep my feet dry in this big wet!
Aside from last season of course, is this what the wet is like in broome normally?

Re: WA Kimberley and Pilbara Wet Season - January 2014 - 22/01/2014 04:20

That's the most refreshing shower I have had in a while. Had to crack a bottle of NZ white to celebrate lol. Just easing a little now. Any time you get 100mm its a big event for Broome Zobubble.

Re: WA Kimberley and Pilbara Wet Season - January 2014 - 22/01/2014 04:21

I think our frogs have been washed away. Water is getting higher around the back yard had to dig a few trenches.

eased off but there is more heavy stuff on the way in 10 minutes.

Re: WA Kimberley and Pilbara Wet Season - January 2014 - 22/01/2014 12:40

170.2mm. What a night of rain. Broome just sat under it for hours. Nice little convergence zone if it was 40-50kms either way it would have missed. Luck of the draw and this time we lucked it. About time we saw a weather event like that. The roads were flowing the rain was just falling in sheets from the sky. It was warm rain too. Quite often with the big thunderstorms the rain is much colder. Last night it was just beautiful standing out in it.

Re: WA Kimberley and Pilbara Wet Season - January 2014 - 22/01/2014 13:13

Yep Popeye a good lashing of rain and so consistent for so long .

Havent seen it rain so hard for so long since the big downpour in 1997 where we had over 400mms in 12 hours .May have to look that one up... the rain just coming last night looked like a lot of ot was forming into good convection about 100kms out from here.

Went for a walk down GPoint beach at about 6.30 pm yesterday and it absoulutely pissed down there and got drenched but my pouch was loving it.

Also noticed huge algae bloom all along shoreline maybe caused by rain from last cyclone, it was like a sewer down there esp at low tide ,never seen it that bad before.

Re: WA Kimberley and Pilbara Wet Season - January 2014 - 22/01/2014 16:10

Yeah nice rains hey Des. Wanting more already.

Interesting about that Algae bloom along the beach. I might go down for a look this arvo. With the big swell and churned up waters off Broome for the last week I wonder if it is just finely mushed up weed or something that has drifted in with the big seas. Will check it out later. Love living here. Weather/environment never ceases to amaze me. Wild...

Re: WA Kimberley and Pilbara Wet Season - January 2014 - 22/01/2014 16:28

Yes Algae bloom yesterday was unbelievableat about 6pm .. Pardon my expression but it was like standing in the sh.t ponds ..same colour but no distinct odour ..thank god shocked smile

Do you reckon that there was a bit of interaction between moisure coming in from the south and a delevoping low in the north coming together to cause all that rain ? As I mentioned it did seem like a lot of convection was delevoping out to sea from here, building, and then coming into Broome.

Sweet little storm hitting Broome right now. Just got back from the plains for a bit of a chase. Was a bit of fun. Couple of OK pics and go pro footage. will have to have a look through it. Jimbo might have some better shots if he stayed till it hit.

Re: WA Kimberley and Pilbara Wet Season - January 2014 - 26/01/2014 13:04

Yeah was a great storm hey popeye!, just a shame wasn't too many clear air bolts, so no good lightning pics, some nice shelfies though, pics are on FB page.It was crazy winds down port when it hit it hit with force, so I attempted to hide from it behind the big toll shed as wind & rain were absolutely roaring in, very wet night in the end!, interesting to see what the next few days have for us, I hope it holds out till after fireworks tonight!...

Re: WA Kimberley and Pilbara Wet Season - January 2014 - 26/01/2014 15:06

Yeah I am hooked now. Might not take the kids next time lol. but it was a good feed at the Roebuck roadhouse on the way out though. Best strike was the one when you rocked up which I missed.

After clearing out the crap I managed to get a string of about 20 half decent shots and when you click through them quickly it looks awesome. Might see if I can put them together.

Radar is looking juicy again out past Derby. Could be a bit hit and miss for the fireworks tonight. Big call for the shire to make. Imagine 3000 people all caught out with something like last night screaming in. AHHH nasty.

This photo is titled 'Crocodile cloud'.

WOW Broome got creamed again this arvo. One of those storms when your driving around wondering what am I doing out in this lol. Got a little bit of video as it was building on the edge of town but gee when it hit, it hit hard. Loving it. Another 50mm to go with the 50mm from last night.

Re: WA Kimberley and Pilbara Wet Season - January 2014 - 27/01/2014 01:33

Footage from this arvo. Nothing overly fantastic but gee she let rip once it hit 5 minutes later in town. So many bolts hit within 0-2 seconds of where I was parked in town. Car shuddering stuff. Loved it.

Just had an amazing little system pass over Karratha only 10mm rain but we had 104 km/h wind gust! Lovely. Still hot and bloody sticky though.
