There is an error in the thread title, it says "wet season"

Can it be changed to "dry season"

Re: Central Queensland Wet Season - February 2019 - 02/02/2019 11:25

39 deg next Saturday if GFS is correct for Rocky.

If this isn't El Nino then what is it?

A very welcome but surprising 5ml overnight.

Re: Central Queensland Wet Season - February 2019 - 03/02/2019 08:53

We had 5.4mm yesterday and 2.2mm overnight. Things are fairly dry when you're getting excited about a rainfall total that will disappear in evaporation within a few hours. On a positive note we have surpassed our January total already.

We were out not far from home last night. It rained proper rain there for a bit so they would have got lots more. As soon as we turned into our road it was dry.

Hopefully we will get some more. We need it.

Forecast for Rocky and Yeppoon tomorrow says rain at times tomorrow.

14mm here overnight!

Re: Central Queensland Wet Season - February 2019 - 04/02/2019 10:57

Looking like the first three quarters of February might be a writeoff for rain as well.

If it is not the high in the Tasman sea, it is the monsoon trough giving us endless drought.
Posted by: mysteriousbrad

Re: Central Queensland Wet Season - February 2019 - 04/02/2019 16:55

Had another 5mm from showers overnight
Posted by: Vinnie

Re: Central Queensland Wet Season - February 2019 - 04/02/2019 17:56

Looks like a heatwave in Rocky from this time next week, will wait and see if it happens . GFS has 35 deg Sunday, 37 on Monday and 40 on Tuesday, OCF also is showing this heat.

Hope it's not like back in late November .

If Rocky got as much rain as Townsville had , would the effects be even worse?
Posted by: RC

Re: Central Queensland Wet Season - February 2019 - 04/02/2019 19:24

No point speculating as it is extremely unlikely to happen.

We do not generally get the monsoon here, unless something drags it down, then it zooms back pretty quickly anyway.

Re: Central Queensland Wet Season - February 2019 - 05/02/2019 09:24

Another 5.5mm overnight

I think the BOM Rocky page describes how Rocky is in between, where it's too far south to get any regular monsoonal influence and to far north to get any benefit from the passage of southern cold fronts.

GFS going now for 42 deg next Wednesday.

Well it will be a change from this constant cool cloudy windy weather.

Another 5mm in the gauge!

Another nothing here.

The solar pump now is struggling to keep the water supply up. Endless overcast days means little electricity.

Same here, I'm running my solar bore pumps on a couple of small generators to keep the troughs and tanks topped up during this cloudy period in what is a seemingly endless dry season.

Re: Central Queensland Wet Season - February 2019 - 06/02/2019 16:45

Now they are saying 43 deg next Wednesday in Rocky 41 in Brisbane GFS.

Vinnie, anything other than this boring 23-31c days with little rain to speak of. At least if the heat builds hopefuly it will lead to rain or storms.

Going onto our second month of this weather.

It's trying very hard to rain here. But the atmosphere is just to dry and stable with La Nina like conditions delivery just cloud cover but no rain.

Re: Central Queensland Wet Season - February 2019 - 07/02/2019 11:37

I do not think I have ever seen so many overcast days with no rain.

It has been over a week now since the sun went away.

La Nina is associated with wetter than average conditions.

A shower here. A scud there. Have made it to 25ml over the last week/10 days. It has managed to lift my citrus trees spirits.

Re: Central Queensland Wet Season - February 2019 - 08/02/2019 10:02

GFS is oddly saying 44 deg next Wednesday, OCF saying 38.

I do wonder how much longer before we see some substantial rain , next month?

Seems like decent conditions for storms today, 35 degrees and 55% humidity here, see cloud building to the south/south west

There wont be any flood for a long long time I feel.
I think were well into an unprecedented and extended period of suppressed rainfall that could last 7-10 years, and set all kinds of new records for drought in this area of Qld.

Re: Central Queensland Wet Season - February 2019 - 14/02/2019 16:09

Ergon did a planned power cut here 8.30 to 12.30midday lucky they had it back on an hour earlier.

No air con/fans etc.

Lawn seems to be growing but we do have a sand spear so water daily , the growth in 9 days was phenomenal. At the moment though since mowing it looks brown .

I reckon we will see some decent rain in March and April but not enough to make up for the deficit for the past 2 months.

I just hope when our visitors from New Zealand visit us in mid May it isn't humid and warm . Hopefully normal temps for May by then..

Also how can Rocky get 40 deg next Thursday with SE winds ? That is what they are saying and 38 deg on Friday with S winds.

Seems odd to see heat with that wind direction doesn''t it ? Anyone know why?

38.9c for me today, I've moved down into Koongal from Norman Gardens in recent weeks. Looking at 39c tomorrow again, might nudge 40c. Keeping an eye on OMA, some models showing she may move up into our neck of the woods next week.

Anyone notice the mornings feeling a little fresher?
It looks like summer is just about done, already the fist signs of Autumn are upon us, the flowing grasses usually seen in April are out now, the black cockatoos have totally vanished like they do in May. What a strange season that was, so very dry and very brief summer.

I'll give it another 4 weeks before I say that . I think if we haven't had rain in the next 4 weeks we won't have any until next season.

I thought 30 percent chance meant a 70 percent chance of not getting anything ?

---

Think this cyclone will really just mean lots of wind/cooler temps for Rocky/Yeppoon, doubt we will see much rain from it.

Re: Central Queensland Wet Season - February 2019 - 23/02/2019 08:59

Looks like everything was against us getting rain this season.

Stagnant high's in the Tasman. Stagnant monsoon trough's and now cyclones hanging around the coral sea like a bad smell.
Posted by: ColdFront

Re: Central Queensland Wet Season - February 2019 - 23/02/2019 09:04

Is that what you got from it? If it had said "100% chance of no rain" you'd have a leg to stand on. But you don't because the forecast proved to be accurate. They said there was a chance of showers and you got showers. The forecast was never the issue. Your lack of understanding of the forecast is !! That and your seemingly endless need to bash the BoM.
Posted by: Vinnie

Re: Central Queensland Wet Season - February 2019 - 23/02/2019 09:45

I have more dislike for Higgins than the BOM.

I just find the forecasts confusing since they changed the format I don't know how many years back . Eg today it says Yeppoon 20 percent chance of any rain then to the right under Capricornia Area it says 30 percent chance of a shower in the north. So a different percentage and also says "in the north" where do they mean north ? Yeppoon is north isn't it or do they mean Byfield ?
Posted by: ColdFront

Re: Central Queensland Wet Season - February 2019 - 23/02/2019 10:11

The forecasting system isn't perfect. Nothing is. But it was right yesterday in Yeppoon. Shoot Ken Kato a PM and ask him how it works. He'll help you a lot. Continually complaining in here is tiresome. In fact Ken has decided to stop posting in the cyclone threads which is a loss to the people in there that want to learn but I fully understand why he has gotten fed up with it.

Send him a PM and ask him to explain it. He'll be happy to help.

Re: Central Queensland Wet Season - February 2019 - 24/02/2019 12:32

Geez Rocky will be a tinderbox if we didn't get any good rains in the next couple of months. I mean normally in the dry season it is low humidity ... if the vegetation is super dry. Going to be a winter full of smoke ?

Quite breezy and pleasant here in Yeppoon 28 deg with only 56 percent humidity .

Posted by: RC

Re: Central Queensland Wet Season - February 2019 - 24/02/2019 18:07

Looking at the BOM 4 day chart. Back to a stagnant high in the Tasman sea. Cooler south easterly winds but no rain.

Re: Central Queensland Wet Season - February 2019 - 26/02/2019 11:05

So it's just about time to talk about the possibilities of winter rainfall.

In many of the previous dry years, we have often picked up a cutoff upper low or cold pool that drifts up through the interior through NSW & Western Qld to park over Capricornia or the Sth Tropical Coast, very occasionally creating an ECL as it moves over the sea. Early June 2007 was a good example.

So that's what I'm hoping for now. Something like that during May/June/July. Otherwise were in for a very bad extremely difficult drought for the rest of the year and possibly into 2020 as well if this dry pattern continues.

Wow, thats bad.
Talking to my Grandfather yesterday who is 96 this year, and lived most of his life on the land west of Rockhampton. He reckons this is the driest he's seen it since the great drought of 1943/44. And if we dont get rain within 2-3 months it will be driest in his lifetime.

Re: Central Queensland Wet Season - February 2019 - 27/02/2019 10:54

This summer has been dry, December started off well but that was it . What gets me is the temperatures, if you look at how "hot " it was , Rocky had

December 31.7 (0.5 deg below average ) Nights 1.3deg above
January 31.2 (0.8 deg beloe average) Nights 0.5 deg above

February obviously above average...

Seems Rocky doesn't have a stinking hot summer if the southern part of the country does . Or if it is stinking hot up here they aren't.

It seems to have been a milder dry summer dominated by SE winds, with the only real heat in early November to mid December then a cool spell from Christmas to early February. Now another cool spell

Now we're back to SE winds and cooler again..

I guess we could have been worse with a hot dry summer like no rain at all and several deg above normal.

GFS is hinting at some decent rain next Thursday for Rocky and Yeppoon around 40-50mm . Fingers crossed !

It is so dry that our original stock dam had all of a foot of water in it. Was talking to an older resident last night who agreed they hadn't seen it so dry.

We have been lucky to get maybe 2 good rains from storms this season but it has all just run off as the ground is so dry. By good I mean about 20ml. Very disappointing when you hear of people a k or so away getting 70ml.

The dry will end. One day.

Spent the afternoon replacing nozzles on the pop up sprinklers . Was wondering why I had only small bits of green and lots of brown turns out underground water plus sand blocks sprinklers over time.

This weather reminds me of the movie Groundhog Day.
