Sadly it seems were stuck in an El Nino /Modoki dry phase, and often these things last 7-10 years, so get used to it I reckon.

As the wind gusts in from the sea, it's bringing light showers on and off again tonight. It's not a lot but it's nice to hear it on the roof.

Just a shame it's only on the coastal fringe and not going much inland. Rocky I assume is not even getting a drop.

Re: Central Queensland Wet Season - March 2019 - 02/03/2019 09:54

What has been differant also this summer was the extreme lack of morning dew.

It has been that dry not even dew can form.

What's causing the SE winds to actually bring scattered on and off showers to Yeppoon the last few days, because all summer we have had SE winds and barely any rain from it , so what is different ?

Re: Central Queensland Wet Season - March 2019 - 03/03/2019 10:05

Thursday is up to 35 deg but it's only for 1 day and then back to the previous pattern again.

I wonder what May this year is going to be like, last year it was quite cool at nights early in the season. We didn't have much rain over the previous summer except for 1 month (Feb last year) similar to how the just gone summer is going.. (December just gone was the only wet month)

I always thought if we didn't get enough rain the atmosphere would stay warm/ocean etc and then you end up with a warmer than normal winter. Wheras with lots of rain the heat removed somewhat before winter arrives.

Then again if it is dry into May , dryer air means low humidity means cooler nights I think...

GFS always is a bit over exaggerated on temps both min and max.. wait until a couple days before

Re: Central Queensland Wet Season - March 2019 - 06/03/2019 16:49

Only thing GFS gets right is rain.

It has predicted us nothing for months, and it is what we get.

Re: Central Queensland Wet Season - March 2019 - 06/03/2019 17:13

Yeah it does over exaggerate temps . I remember a couple of weeks back it had Rocky getting 43/44 deg but Rocky got 38 deg .

At least the wind on the coast finally has settled down and isn't gusting like crazy.

Nothing here either. Bloody dry is what it is. Not sure how we can have so much cloud and no rain. Stayed home so I didn't have to leave stupid dog alone because storms were predicted and they aren't here.

I understand your pain. A big blob of rain sitting over the whole of Capricornia would be amazing. In the third month of the year and haven't even hit 80mm YTD.

Do you guys think we might see some significant rain through winter?

I hope we get good winter rain. Since Oswald things have been patchy, and even before. I miss the storms, much as I don't really like them, because it was regular rain. For the last few years it has been a cycle of dry, big enough drop to bring things back from total death, just to see them go downhill again.

I have bought some plants to replace some we lost in the fires but am doubting if I should have. Water is getting very precious.
Posted by: RC

Re: Central Queensland Wet Season - March 2019 - 06/03/2019 21:55

The rain has always been patchy, but it is the scale and longevity this time around of the dry that is unusual.

From NSW right through to Central Queensland.

Re: Central Queensland Wet Season - March 2019 - 07/03/2019 10:17

Big change in the weather this morning.

Rather then being slightly cloudy and extremely dry, it is overcast and extremely dry.

I see parts around Mackay got 100+mm yesterday.

People are saying from just north of Marlborough all the way up the coast is green as green.

Then there south though is a desert like there is a barrier stopping any rain from falling further south.
Posted by: Vinnie

Re: Central Queensland Wet Season - March 2019 - 07/03/2019 10:30

What I don't get is , we have SE winds yet the dew point is 24 deg ? Is that because to the south the ocean is warmer than normal? Normally SE winds give us slightly lower dew points and slightly lower humidity...Does a dry summer mean a warmer than normal winter? I mean wasn't last summer similar only 1 month was wet (February) and then we seemed to cool down in May quite suddenly.

Yeppoon has picked up 43mm this month from some coastal showers but Rocky just 1.2 mm ! Rocky only on 93.4mm for the year to date yikes ! Yeppoon not much better 146mm.

Yeah Yeppoon doesn't look dirty brown yet even though we're over 300mm short of rainfall... am still mowing the lawn every 10-14 days but probably growth due to the sprinkler system . That small amount of rain we've had this month made the grass grow .

Going back on Climate Data Online from the Bom the last time we had heavy rains in winter was July 2016, so we could be due for something ... says 106 and 252 mm the next day , I cannot remember it lol . going further back I can't find any months in winter with 3 figures only maybe some with 40 odd mm or something in a day..

I think if we get nothing next wet season will be better though.

What a morning. Headed into town early, got to time it right to miss the school buses and before all the nomads who do 60. Perfect timing.

Absolutely pelting down with rain. Hoped my windscreen wipers still worked it was so long since they had been used. Pelted down for a while in town too then dried off for me to get my errands done. Ran into the pelting rain again on the way home. Wonderful, I had forgotten what it was.

Depression hit when I got home. Not a single drop. frown

When I lived in Perth, if you got 16 mm in January that was considered above average rainfall lol.

We seem to be back into this pattern of overcast days again like last month but not much rain.

I'm trying to think in all the years I've been here (7 years) i cannot remember it being this dry in summer. It might have been? I can remember some very wet months though. We aren't in El Nino but conditions seem like it ?

Re: Central Queensland Wet Season - March 2019 - 08/03/2019 18:36

Climate outlook overview
The autumn (March to May) climate outlook, issued 28 February 2019, indicates a drier than average season is likely for the eastern States, the southern two-thirds of the NT and eastern SA. Inland western WA has a weak tendency towards a wetter than average season.
Warmer than average autumn days and nights are very likely for almost all of Australia.
The Bureau's ENSO Outlook is currently at El NiŮo WATCH, meaning there is a 50% chance of El NiŮo developing; this is double the normal chance. See the Climate Influences section for more information

No widespread rain front with an onshore flow. Well really we need a cyclone.

Re: Central Queensland Wet Season - March 2019 - 11/03/2019 16:45

I am getting ready for the next fire. Should be another doozy with all this fuel for it which we legally can not touch. Just add another year or so of fallen leaves, dead grass tree fronds and spears to all this dead wood and nothing will stop it.

As you can see there is very few trees coming back from such a hot fire. Pity we were not allowed to clear any of the scrub before the fire. Had we been able to the fire would not have been so hot and my small mammals and reptiles might have survived.

Posted by: justme

Re: Central Queensland Wet Season - March 2019 - 12/03/2019 13:26

Yes Bundybear, the lack of wet season will not help those trees survive and become fuel for next one but enough undergrowth to start another fire soon. You can see the effect from the current fire at woodgate on Gympie radar

We've had 2 planned outages , one around October and one last month from Ergon to make our power more reliable and so far it seems to have worked , though no massive storm really here just went in this order.

SW wind picked up

Moderate showers , wind died down , lightning a lot ,

Now it's just light showers , distant rumbles and the odd lightning here and there.

I got an early night home from work, there was powerlines down on main Street in Park Avenue, boss told us it wouldn't be on before our shift finished so go to leave an hour early (yippee)
Pity we go so long without a decent drop and when we do it comes with the destruction of what was a fierce storm that hit us today.

Looks like some sort of decent rain system is predicted for SEQ.

Forecasts for CQ. Nothing, only hit and miss storms.

Looking back at records at a local weather station starting at 1939. Only 1969 has had a start to the year like this year for this area.

Where is all the coastal moisture build up?

What do you mean by coastal moisture buildup? The humidity is here but no rain frown

Climate and Water outlook for AprilĖJune 2019:
ē No strong push towards wetter or drier than average three months for most of Australia, with low likelihood of drought breaking rains.
ē Days and nights very likely to be warmer than average for nearly all of Australia.
ē Low streamflows most likely in MarchĖMay at more than 3/4 of locations.

GFS has pushed the SE change from this weekend , to Tuesday and now to Thursday next week.

So looks like almost another week of this .

You get rain coming in from the easterly direction. Generally does not penetrate inland too much, but it is why coastal CQ has a higher rainfall then inland.

Humidity is not high enough for decent storms either. It builds up, then it just blows away from the afternoon sea breeze.

As I was mowing the lawn this afternoon a couple of times there was what looked like a storm coming then it fizzled out then again it looked like something then it fizzled.

It's almost like March feels warmer than February .

Perhaps tomorrow is better for storms forecast says storms 70 percent chance .

We used to have a Doberman Cross back in Bundy, scared of storms then we had a Labrador and storms had no effect . Not sure why some dogs just hate storms.

And the humidity was just so high today yet we get nothing out of it ... seems unfair . I mean the level of humidity on the coast here was tropical... oh well..

My stumpy cattle dog doesn't care about storms. Wouldn't say she loves them and does get a bit nervous when they bang and crash but retreats to her bed on the veranda. When she was younger she would run around barking at it.

I see all the storms are giving us a wide berth tonight.

My theory is there is simply no instability in the atmosphere on the coast to ranges, so the storms die on the ranges and cannot make it to the coast.

This has been happening for years now.

Finally a change in the weather and the dry gaps are slowly filling in.

The storms while very scattered and narrow are taking a different direction nearly every time.

Our dead grass is now showing signs of green in amongst the deadness. We should stay green for the rest of the month now.
Posted by: Vinnie

Re: Central Queensland Wet Season - March 2019 - 21/03/2019 19:44

Our grass was mowed like 6 days ago must be the humidity here cos it now looks like it was never mowed. I did mulch mow and I do water it every day , it's on sandy soil. At least if it was dead or brown less maintenance but on sandy soil then it gets all sandy and grainy and dusty.

Possible change in weather pattern late next week?

This summer seemed rather mild or am I imagining it ? I mean even Rocky wasn't too bad in temps in January and December in the low 30s.

Re: Central Queensland Wet Season - March 2019 - 22/03/2019 08:23

This weather feels like December and we're getting a build of humidity before some big rains .

The model I keep looking keeps changing, SE winds cool have gone now back to NE . 27 deg overnight on the coast.

I wonder if we might get some big rains in April/May... can't remember if the region has had in April /May big rains before.

Feels like we're in a never gonna cool down before May/winter spell in the weather.

Yeah I see the cyclone Trevor and think it's nowhere near us so we won't be affected but yeah they can change course.

Just a feeling, I think the region is going to get a big rain event not sure when and then we will see a change in weather pattern to slightly cooler days. I may be totally wrong . I remember a really muggy warm winter a couple of years back.

Re: Central Queensland Wet Season - March 2019 - 23/03/2019 15:06

Yes Bundy weather isn't as drastic as some places with heat or as bad in humidity either. Its just I would appreciate something a little more cooler for a change.
Word has it at the moment, that in the next town boom, its going to be Bundaberg and west of it to Gin Gin. So if you know of anyone interested in moving here, tell them to get a move on as the prices will certainly take a hike.

I am looking forward to winter to get some cooler weather, I used to be able to handle this weather, but not so anymore. Age plays a major role in not coping.

This summer has not been a typical Bundy Summer. It's been warmer than average and should have started cooling down now that we are 3 weeks into autumn. These two Lows crossing the coast to the north and west might temper things and see a transition away from hot days.

Not just a couple of days either. Bundy's March average max is 29.2 degs . This month so far it is 31.6 degs up 2.4 degs so significantly warmer. Minimum is up 1.4 degs also.

Maryborough maximum is 2.8 degs above average. Again quite significant. Minimum up 1.2 degs.

Rockhampton up 2.8 degs for maximums . Minimum up 1.6 degs. Interestingly Rockhampton's average for this March is higher than their December average (their hottest month on average) .

It's like the seasons start later.

I think we'll get one more big rain event then it will cool down

It will probably rain so hard and so heavy that the atmosphere will be so clear of heat and humidity that has been building.

Then we will go towards more cooler temps ... maybe in a month

Perhaps.

Severe Weather Warning
for HEAVY RAINFALL
For people in Central West and parts of Central Highlands and Coalfields, Channel Country and Maranoa and Warrego Forecast Districts.
Issued at 10:58 am Wednesday, 27 March 2019.
Ex-tropical cyclone Trevor is producing heavy rain leading to flash flooding over central Queensland.

Weather Situation: At 11am ex-tropical cyclone Trevor was located southeast of Mount Isa, and is slowly moving to the east-southeast. A slow-moving surface trough extends to the east from the low through parts of central Queensland.
Bands of heavy rainfall are expected through today and into early Thursday across the warning area.
Widespread six-hourly rainfall totals between 75mm and 125mm are likely to continue developing within the warning area, with locally heavier falls possible with thunderstorms.
In the longer term, the low and associated surface trough will likely move slowly east. As a result, heavy rainfall will extend to parts of the Central Highlands and Coalfields from late today into Thursday. The threat of heavy rain is expected to ease during Thursday. Flood warnings and a flood watch are current for parts of central and western Queensland.
Damaging wind gusts remain possible with thunderstorms Wednesday afternoon and evening, but are not considered likely across this area. Severe thunderstorm warnings will be issued if the risk of damaging wind gusts increases.
Locations which may be affected include Emerald, Longreach, Clermont, Winton, Isisford and Barcaldine.
95mm in the 6 hours to 5:10am at Mt Harden (SW of Blackall).
82mm in the 6 hours to 7:40am at Bogewong (SW of Longreach).

You would think would slowly move east and drench the entire CQ area.

It would be lovely to get some water into the dams. Our tanks are full but I don't know why especially when I have been known to give bits of the garden a drop now and then although our house is water efficient.

It isn't too bad outside but I am inside, have been for the last 2 weeks, because I did something to my back.

Re: Central Queensland Wet Season - March 2019 - 30/03/2019 15:45

Not a drop so far today but still time. Need 50mm in a hurry to get some water run in to the dams before winter.

Apparently all our 10mm falls have added up this month to 99mm for the month. With a splurge of 23mm on the last day.

Re: Central Queensland Wet Season - March 2019 - 03/04/2019 23:06

Bit of shower activity at the moment forecast says 10 percent chance and partly cloudy lol for Yeppoon.
Posted by: ColdFront

Re: Central Queensland Wet Season - March 2019 - 03/04/2019 23:10

Forecast says a slight chance of a shower and you got a shower. Go figure.
Posted by: Vinnie

Re: Central Queensland Wet Season - March 2019 - 03/04/2019 23:43

No it said 10 percent chance and partly cloudy no shower icon.

So if it had a sunny icon and it pours all day ?

Ok so if it says 0 percent chance and we get rain what?

Not worth talking about on here again about this... I'll just use the radar instead of the forecasts.

Re: Central Queensland Wet Season - March 2019 - 04/04/2019 07:17

I read tbe forecast. It said slight chance of a shower for Yeppoon and that's what you got.

Re: Central Queensland Wet Season - March 2019 - 04/04/2019 10:31

Ok here goes again. Can someone explain?

It's the way it is worded these days. Surely it isn't just me not understanding it right. Why do you always respond when I say something about it (you've worked for the BOM?) I just find it confusing as heck the new forecasts the past few years.

It has a column with a huge paragraph of text for Capricornia Area then has an icon to the left with a rainfall percentage. for Yeppoon

Eg. Last night had partly cloudy icon and 10 percent chance of any rain for Yeppoon

So if you read it is looks like it shows a partly cloudy picture with 10 percent chance of anything falling from the sky.

I dunno I think it's these new forecasts, perhaps the average public cannot decipher them?

I liked the old system maybe when they didn't put a percentage chance of rainfall in it .

I think there was an article on here floating around saying how the percentage system is read these days eg 30 percent chance doesn't mean 70 percent chance of it not happening.

--

So how should I read today's one then it says Yeppoon shower or two 60 percent chance ... so a moderate chance of a shower ?

Then says Capricornia Area - which yeppoon is still in, 40 percent chance of showers near the coast ???Near zero chance of rain elsewhere.

Re: Central Queensland Wet Season - March 2019 - 04/04/2019 11:27

Just because it didnít rain where you are vinnie doesnít mean it didnít rain somewhere else in Yeppoon.

Re: Central Queensland Wet Season - March 2019 - 04/04/2019 11:42

Thanks Brad. We've been through this before but Vinnie seems to enjoy attacking the BoM at every opportunity. Maybe he can do the forecasts and we'll see how he goes. Looking to an icon to predict the rainfall in your area is simply absurd.

The forecast yesterday for his location quite clearly stated there was a small window of opportunity for a shower or two and he got a shower .

As you said , it is a big place and radar revealed heavy showers came ashore there last night. No weather forecast can predict exactly where they will fall or exactly how widespread they are.

..ad current radar shows showers moving on sure in that region.

Ok . I didn't even think of it like that. St Lawrence to Bundaberg is Capricornia or Gladstone? So 293km or about 470ish kmm in area?

Ok I used to live in a city in Australia (Perth) where it was only 50km north south the forecast area.

I apologise if I came across attacking the BOM.

Re: Central Queensland Wet Season - March 2019 - 05/04/2019 09:32

You attack them all the time Vinnie. Forecats are just that, forecasts. They are not set in stone and not always right .
Posted by: Vinnie

Re: Central Queensland Wet Season - March 2019 - 05/04/2019 11:52

I guess so they can't be right all the time.

Not meaning to "attack".

Re: Central Queensland Wet Season - March 2019 - 07/04/2019 20:14

Looks like some sort of shower activity/sprinkle of showers possibly on Thursday.

Coolish in the mornings but hasn't dropped below 20 deg yet.

April is a nice time of year, sun hasn't got that sting to it .

Re: Central Queensland Wet Season - March 2019 - 08/04/2019 23:29

God life is depressing at the moment. Not enough rain. Society going down the hole rapidly. My peaceful life threatened by the pro developers. Come Easter I just about won't even be able to get out of my front gate for traffic. Council have thrown out all regulations regarding creating caravan parks so every second place is becoming one. Bloody roos eating any bit of green to the roots before it can even grow.

My moan for the week. frown I don't think having hurt my back a month back and still not being able to do anything is good for me.

On the upside my family still love me. smile

Re: Central Queensland Wet Season - March 2019 - 09/04/2019 08:37

When the BOM says 10% of showers, it really means 90% you get absolutely nothing.

Re: Central Queensland Wet Season - March 2019 - 09/04/2019 12:54

The mozzies and sandflies are bad at the moment, not much breeze at the moment. Supposed to pick up Thursday.

Seems like we either get flooding rains or not enough rain .

Now we go into a 7-8 month dry spell?

Re: Central Queensland Wet Season - March 2019 - 09/04/2019 14:41

Well my week got better. Go to the shop this morning and come across some dipstick who wants to play brake games whilst doing between 50 and 70 in an 80 k zone. Go to overtake them and they can do 100. Hit the 60 zone and they are doing 30 so I overtook them as I didn't trust them to not suddenly hit the brake entirely.

Then at the shop as I am getting back in my car this woman from the car comes running at me shouting abuse so of course I quickly closed the door. She hits the door and is attempting to open it so I departed a bit quicker than I would normally. She is running after my car, hurling abuse, runs through the middle of the fuel pumps and attempts to hit the car again.

Then goes in the car crying and saying I tried to run her over??????

I have an appt with the policeman who will charge her.

My week has to get better. Surely.
