Far North Queensland Dry Season - Cardwell Northwards - 2019 - 10/05/2019 09:57

So I washed the mould and slime out of the Nylex the other day, should be good for a few months.

Things shaping up nicely for some good falls next week. Of course I have a visitor from down south here Mon-Thursday hahaha.

This map indicates we will be on the wetter southern side of the low/trough. At least we have a track for the moment.

I'll be happy if it's just damp. I struggle with the lack of humidity. Only 23% today. 😝

Everything has just about dried out now. Ground is not squishy to walk on, and now, without that 'marshland' smell.

Sure hope the are wrong with the rain, which would turn things all soggy again.

Re: Far North Queensland Dry Season - Cardwell Northwards - 2019 - 13/05/2019 07:24

BoM have not lowered the forecast rainfall for MAP yet since Saturday morning which seems strange.
My location on Meteye is still Tues 4-15mm, Wed 30-70mm and Thurs 4-15mm. Do not see us getting that. Very happy if we do.

0.4mm in my crystal clear inner tube this morning.

Ol' mate BoM on ABC still thinks a chance of decent rainfall from tonight.

Apparently more BoM aviation staff are being axed from Cairns to be centralized in Brisbane. Ridiculous.

Well this has been very disappointing. Only rain was a light shower yesterday arvo.
Very windy last night with gusts probably around the 60km mark.
Hopefully we get something today

Very rough and Gusty here for a few hours early this morning . Supprised to see Rain Guage still upright with 62mm in it. Radar looks like Cooktown is in for a bit of a drink.

Re: Far North Queensland Dry Season - Cardwell Northwards - 2019 - 15/05/2019 09:08

3.8mm and fairly windy last night.Looks like the crown of a fairly decent tree came down in the yard across the road last night, probably had a few white ants or something else.

Last night -blew me into next month, there is talk of up to 80mm, I think I am beginning to see how that is going to materialise - from 256 radar, a real SW drift to the rain is in play
Posted by: scott12

Re: Far North Queensland Dry Season - Cardwell Northwards - 2019 - 15/05/2019 11:29

37mm here last night and 9mm the night before...

Surprising to see Cairns get so little..

Tully and the mountains and gorge behind had upwards of 60mm last night..

That should make it interesting for the White water rafting championships..not so much the water level in the river but trying to get teams from the road down the trail into the river and over all the slippery rocks...but then again they might enjoy the extra challenge..

Sat pic suggests the low just about running over the top of Weipa as well. Winds picked up here again for the evening.

Had a [censored] day on the water, lost a line and then a spoon on another , then it blew up and was uncomfortable ride home. Only others out were the 2 local pros and nobody hooked up.

Reports of Thursday were better with a few Mackies on the chew and a nice morning out but we had other stuff on.

Just keeps on drizzling up here and no end in sight. Cattle are running out of grass. Just need a week or 2 of fine.

Reckon this is the coldest day we've had in Chillagoe for years. 16 degrees at 6.30am in the house, don't know what it was outside (weather station dying).

We had a few cold mornings, 14-15 degrees, a couple months ago, but not bitterly cold like this.

Currently 23 degrees inside and outside (at 4.15pm). Uggs and woolly jumper on all day. Last time I felt this cold in the daytime was 2011, I think.

Last year I thought about using the heater maybe 2 or 3 times, only in the evenings, and then couldn't be bothered. I pulled it out of the cupboard this morning and ran it for about 4 or 5 hours. Reckon I've only just warmed up. lol.

Just where did all this rain come from. We've had overcast skies out here for the last few weeks.

I'm feeling a bit shellshocked after all that overcast drizzly weather...

I was really starting to find motivation to go out and work in the mud hard to come by...was getting lazier and lazier by the day..

Scott, wasn't so bad inside for doggie and me, but partner sleeps on the deck outside this room... brrrr. But with two feather/down quilts he seems ok down to 17 out there with heavy drapes around.

And now it's drizzling, I can live with that for awhile, will take the opportunity to park the car outside then wash it, pretty dusty right now with unsealed roads.

Finally removed the chicken wire fencing round the atrium flower beds, sheesh, she took two years to learn to behave. Now serious weeding there and roaming the place on the catcher mower for weed free grass lawns long enough to cut for mulch as it's slowed down a lot in this chill.

Obviously Dormant you must not be so great at choosing cool staffy attire for the little princess..!

Each evening my little girl sits dutifully at attention and puts one paw in the air at a time to go through the arm holes and then she proudly tears off around the other 2 scrub mutts to show just how fancy she really is...

She would wear her cool "Bad to the bone" jacket all day as well if I let her..

Morning All,

This post is to notify everyone that this forum will close down very soon.

I want to thank everyone who has contributed to this forum over the past 10 years and in particular the moderators. Without their hard work we would have had to shut down a long time ago.

The forum will become read-only on the 29th of July and it will shut down on the 1st of November.

Thanks again for all your contribution and hopefully the community will be able to find a new home.

Thanks

Todd Baker

Re: Far North Queensland Dry Season - Cardwell Northwards - 2019 - 03/07/2019 14:01

as you guys might have already read, this forum will be closing down in a few weeks.
As an 18 year member of the forum I have had the pleasure of meeting some great people, many of whom I can say are great friends.
We have had so many events in our part of the world over the years, it has been a real pleasure to go through the good and bad with you all. Sharing the experience has been what has made this forum a great place over two decades. Cyclones Larry, Yasi, Yuli and Debbie. So many flooding events, of course this years Townsville floods top that list for me and of course the lean years when 0.4mm was regarded as a relief to get a drop - but thats Townsville!!
While we are still some weeks away from closing, I just wanted to personally thank all of you for contributing to a great community.

Sadly technology moves on, if any of you have any suggestions in a way we car achieve the forums or have them transferred through to another site, please contribute to the thread in the general weather forum.

Kind regards,
and best wishes to you all for the future.

This is truly sad news. Thanks for being here this long, and the great moderation, not an easy job.

Dunno what we'll do in cyclone season. cry

A shame really. For me,- I won't ever go to the WZ site again,- and for that matter, Fairfax and all it's publications can get f**ked too.
Plenty more weather sites would be happy to take in the WZ refugees.

I had no idea til now about Fairfax.

I feel like I'm saying goodbye to a bunch of old friends, that I'll never see again. Will miss you all.

I would definitely pay a small fee. Used to pay $10/pa for a car forum a few years back. It was voluntary, but gave you special access to a members area. I could definitely manage $10 a year, possibly $20. Not a lot, but about all I could manage, although I might consider more, if we really had to in the beginning at least, if it meant the difference between having a forum or not.

It would be great if we could save the data, but if we don't we can build again, even if we start small. In a way small might not be a bad thing. IMHO.

Glad to see you & sundry are having a go, Mick.
I've been paying $18 per 3 months for WZ Pro extras for years now. I used to drop back during dry season, but for the last 5 or so years, I just let it run.
Another, say, $5 a month won't break the bank.

Re: Far North Queensland Dry Season - Cardwell Northwards - 2019 - 04/07/2019 08:21

A few thoughts...

We only have til the 29th July. Talk about short notice, not even 4 weeks. Feels like a lack of respect for what we've built.

If we run out of time, I'm happy to PM the mods my email address.

Anyone else remember the days of yahoo groups? I'm still a member of the Cairns-Tableland Freecycle group.

I don't know how hard or how long it takes to build a new forum, but we could use yahoo groups until we get something established. It would give us breathing space, so we don't lose contact with each other.

WZ is terrible to read on a phone, the font is all different sizes, erratically big & small, in the Reply field the font is tiny. So it will be great to have a forum optimised for mobile.

I certainly is "short notice" a lot will come back from their annual hibernation to find the forums are no longer here! Is it because forums are now classed as dinosaurs, thanks to "social media"?
i for one wont be going to any of those "weather" related sites on face book. Never have, never will!

I much prefer a proper forum.

All that we have been told is that with the advent of social media and changes in the way people conduct discussions, it is hard to justify the case to invest time and money to keep the forums going.

I've seen that many forums have declined, but not all of them. There's still a place for dedicated forums like this. I like the semi anonymity here. As a single old woman living on my own I don't want to broadcast my ID and location, like on FB. I've felt safe on WZ & quite happy to show my location here, and of course location is prime importance discussing weather.

OMG a little bit of rain -- for all of about 30 seconds. I must try to remember to check the gauge and see if there's a quarter of a millimetre... that's if it's not mud.

Why do you persist with a tiny phone screen ?
I thought you had a laptop. That would be heaps better than the phone.
More so if you hooked the laptop up to a 24" monitor.

Well eat a sh!t !!!

Have not been on here for a little while and I come back to this terrible news. I have learned so much over the years through this forum and have absolutely enjoyed every moment. It is very disappointing.

Big thanks to Mick and Raindammit, Who have been there my entire time on the forum. Feel like your both a pair of old mates.

Just wont be the same on these rainy mornings without trolling through posts with my cup of coffee.

For what it’s worth, 20mm overnight. Cool, rainy, and just a tad sad really.😢

I can see weatherzone becoming a virtual ghost town, i can't see too many people coming back here just to check the weather once the forum is gone, they will go elsewhere, same as the people with paid subscriptions. I can't see too many renewing them either? Well i guess if it is all about time and money, then Weatherzone (fairfax) will loose out on both acc. No one will have the time to come here, then they will take their money elsewhere.

I contacted WZ on Wed about the fact that my WZ Pro membership is paid to late August,- well after the read only deadline, asking them for a refund of the remaining time paid for, as I'll be giving WZ a big miss after 28 July and deleting their bookmark.

Got a receipt with a number to acknowledge the lodgment of my query, but as yet no reply has been received. Just what I expected to happen, really.
I'll see if anything turns up on Mon. Maybe it's been put in the 'too hard' basket. smirk

Re: Far North Queensland Dry Season - Cardwell Northwards - 2019 - 05/07/2019 22:53

RF - I'd keep my user name too, or a recognisable variation of it. With WZ I liked the fact that we all know where we each live. I'm unsure of doing that elsewhere, unless it's a new forum built by us. Living in a small town like this it is too easy to find me. Not that anyone would get very far along the last sections of the road...lol.

Vinnie, I do like the idea of Ski's ease of posting a picture. Technology has changed a bit since the days of photobucket.

Well that news is a bit of a shock, Some of the info posted here over the years has been very helpful in educating more people of what drives our weather and how to read it. A lot of very valuable input will be lost.

I've always been interested in the weather, right from dad showing me the daily chart in the paper each morning as a kid. Then finding this forum taught me oh so much more than just to look at the MSLP, different layers , troughs , ridges , MJO , Rossby waves ECT ECT and not to take any model run or outlook too seriously.

The community we had here was like a family and checking on each others totals and conditions has been a link in both hard and good times.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed and special thanks to the Mods..

If we find a new home I'll see you all over there , if not well it's been nice to know you.

Cheers

PS, 6mm this morning from a couple of overnight showers .

Yeh. And thanks.
It's little things like this that are the reasons this forum has died a slow death over the years.
WZ just never gave a [censored] about upgrading their software to stay with the times. Ski.com is 100 times more advanced than this old dinosaur.

Re: Far North Queensland Dry Season - Cardwell Northwards - 2019 - 09/07/2019 18:48

I'd feel strange on a ski site, with our northern weather a radical tangent.
The other site where you have to register before you can look at it is out, for that very reason.

Not sure what the north-western WA people are doing, might be going to FB?

Don't want to lose touch with the FNQ group. I really like our Cardwell Northwards threads, and Townsville people, and happy to incorporate down to Rockie if that's the way the threads go. Not that interested in anything further south than Rockie, snob that I am. I'm still a bit scared to post on the cyclone threads though, so a new forum might be a good idea.

Plenty of time to see how the refugees are handled by the other sites.

And touting a forum by denigrating the one we're on presently is really counterproductive.

As for ski, I joined whirlpool for tech info, and they have all kinds of unrelated stuff these days.

There's someone from WZ on whirlpool at the moment discussing starting a section there. But - WP is anonymous, and I don't see much point in discussing weather if your location isn't known.

Sat on that side for years following all the great info you guys have shared over the years. (Previously Clearskiies and Coastncountry)
lived on the Sunny Coast for over 25 years and moved up to FNQ 3 years ago. Now not far from Dormant.
I too am not in favour of a more southern based forum, and I see that ski.com has posted up a welcome to WZ folks.
But as noted earlier, there is so much data posted on these forums that it would be a great loss to all if gone to the past, as are all the people behind the posts.
Although I haven`t talked or met in person, you feel like a close family.
Hopefully something can be worked out on an alternative before the closure date.

I found them, and the people who contribute to them, to be an absolute fountain of knowledge, and I have learnt so much over the years.

Critically, in times of disaster (Larry, Yasi, the floods this year to name but a few) I found this to be the best-informed source and interpreter of knowledge, certainly better than mainstream sources.

Cheers

Yep, you sure did. Hope Simmo gets here in time too.
At least these wonderings and ramblings will be here til November, for people to see where we all disappeared to.
Some of us have started to chat away here:

Simmo checks in on the site regularly.
He's just decided not to post anything, that's all.

Bit disappointing to find out we are losing the forums after all these years. I have registered for Aus Weather too. Same user name!

Where are most members moving too?

Me and 28 have already hooked up on Aus Weather Forum, Don't know what is taking the rest of you so long.
It's not like WZ is going to do it all for you anymore.
Most of the Locals here can now be found on https://www.theaustralianweatherforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=94&t=2474

Life Changes People, WZ no longer appreciates our input. Hopefully we can all continue to observe and communicate at
a new location.

I was a member of WZ long before my current 2006 member date, even though that date is going back 13 years now.

And what do you end up with after all that ??? All the contributions made by everyone, the efforts of the mods, the discovery through discussions, Community's connected, the education passed on ?

You get a shutdown due to profit margins.

I might not have agreed with everyone I met here on WZ, but at least I had a chance to disagree with them and them with me.

I guesse that does not matter any more.

It's not unlike Photobucket, the way they pulled the plug, and literally destroyed extensive sections of mant forums.

Maybe some (slightly) warmer nights after tonight. Thank f**k.
My scotch whisky bill has gone up big time trying to warm my innards.
I'm thinking Marakai might be feeling the chill up there too. Poor old fella.

I've joined up on AWF as well, not so much as to post but to be able to keep up with what's happening in the Qld tropics as that's where most of you guys have gone to.

I'm mainly posting on ski.com.au as there are some familiar names on there from my neck of the woods.

Must travel up your way again sometime. The last time was in 2012 for the total solar eclipse.

The two equivalent day to day threads in the tropical forum on Ski have about four times the posts of AWF.

Yep, way more people have migrated from WZ to Ski than any other weather site.

Ha, thanks for the heads up guys. Guess I (will mostly) read you over at TAWS/SKI then :-)

PS: was just coming online to see how everybody was doing with the cold up here on the Tablelands. Living here for 10 years now and originally came from Germany, Thuringia.. was used to -10 to -20 deg winters.. I'm freezing at 20 degrees plus nowadays. :-)
Stay warm.

Well done Logansi.
It has a much better feel than than Ski and AWF. All the main topics are covered, and when more threads appear it can only get better.
Ski forum just doesn't seem like a good fit, being one who hates the thought of snow and cold,- and the other AWF is just downright pathetic.
All that's needed now are some weather events to make it more interesting.

Guess it is time to delete the weatherzone bookmark, wont be needing that anymore,Elders weather is just the same.
Shak out...

It's the Dry Season hickory, FNQ kn WZ was always pathetic in the Dry Season.... cause nothing happens.

Re: Far North Queensland Dry Season - Cardwell Northwards - 2019 - 26/07/2019 10:29

Yep too true 28...its all rather predictable from now till the storm season starts...

AWF looks more or less the same as here hickory..

and at least its centred on our FNQ weather..

I'm not at all interested in what happens day to day in Bundaberg or Rocky ….

Yeah Scott, I joined it and Ski a couple of weeks ago, and have a look every couple of days.
The AusWeather one only started on monday, and it just seems like it will be the better of the three, when Oct - Nov roll around and there's something better than just cold weather happening.
Some good t/storms in the arvo's might be the first things of any interest to look forward to.
