Winter 2006 Weather Images - 31/05/2006 17:59

Well... winter is kicking off tomorrow, here is the place to share all your weather images for Winter 2006.

I've tried numerous times to get my image from yesterday afternoon at about 4:15pm in Sydney to be the right size... finally have been able to do so, apart from a big black line at the top  . Here was the offshore thunderstorm:

Re: Winter 2006 Weather Images - 01/06/2006 08:44

Just a quick reminder for posting images. Please try and keep image file sizes down to around 75kb and no larger than 700 pixels on the longest border (as stated in the guidelines), and please use clickable thumbs wherever possible. It just makes it fairer for those on dial up, as the thread gets full of images, and loading time takes forever wink !

If you are experiencing problems with image sizes, one of the mods will be happy to help you out!

Looking forward to all the snow, fog and frosty weather images...and maybe the odd thunderstorm! wink

Re: Winter 2006 Weather Images - 02/06/2006 13:04

Great fog this morning, and I was able to take some pics after the 'Kinder Run'! By this stage it had started to lift a little. Visibility was down to around 50m whilst I was driving.

A few more here.

Brilliant shots Jane!!  - they have serious atmosphere...they would fit beautifully into my favours publication - a British mag called "Outdoor Photography" which I buy (just for the pictures.......)

If you aren't entering photography comps, you should be!

Beautiful Jane! laugh
Nothing as nice here, it looks cold and it was. A light mist struggled skyward for about 5 minutes after the suns first rays struck the ground. Little jewels of light sparkled energetically on the grass having sprung to life with this sun and the magpies announced the arrival of the morning for all to hear. A hot coffee beckoned.

God I am sickening laugh laugh laugh laugh

Very poetic Tim...and a gorgeous image too!

Thankyou all for your kind comments! I am yet to enter in any sort of photographic competition, but it is a goal of mine...eventually! wink

Jane O, there is nothing like the stunning British gardens and country side. One day I will return, pity I didn't have my digi cam while I was there 10 years ago.

Re: Winter 2006 Weather Images - 02/06/2006 23:28

Ah Jane, why did you have to bring back those memories!! The Poms definitely know how to make gardens and parkland! So do the French for that matter. I could fill a book of those gardens and Parks.
So here ya go Jane - just to remind you and get those feet itching again seeing as you did it to me laugh wink laugh

Top-left - Buckingham Palace, London
Top Right - Kensington Gardens, London
Middle Left - Buckingham again, London
Middle right - Napoleon's Tomb, Paris
Bottom left - Monet's Gardens, Giverny-France
Bottom Right - Versaille Apartments, France
Apologies for the totally non weather shots, its all Janes fault!

i was helping Steveo, to resize the photo to fit into the forum to get it under 75kb but i used Adobe Photoshop 7.0 to resize and got it resize to not make it small enough.

Hope that helped you Steveo.

Lovely wave generated from a Tasman low at a spot called Mads which is at Barrack Point, NSW. If I had a non ventilated wetsuit I would have paddled out to this too laugh

I was itching to do it but the idea of having to overcome the cold water and possible hypothermia told me no.

Nice shot Dave. Is the roof on that house really that blue, have you made some adjustments to the photo?

Re: Winter 2006 Weather Images - 03/06/2006 23:48

Thanks TLN...That blue roof is a shelter for the playground underneath it, it's not a house.... And yes I did adjust the levels a bit.

Very nice pics people! seems to be theme of sunrise/sunsets and foggy/frosty pics so I will continue that with these two:

Both taken down the road near Lake Joondalup in the Northern burbs of Perth. Taken about a week or so ago I think, I forget the exact date because lately every day looks the same weatherwise here! frown

Re: Winter 2006 Weather Images - 07/06/2006 07:35

According to a website I visited the full moon this month will rise on the evening of June 12th (I hope that date is correct). Can anyone tell me if this full moon will rise further south on the horizon than any other full moon rises this year, or will that event be in July perhaps?
Posted by: Lert

Re: Winter 2006 Weather Images - 07/06/2006 11:19

11th June the moon rises about Az 123deg. The moon is full again on 11 July and rises about Az 122deg..
Posted by: Tornadosky

Re: Winter 2006 Weather Images - 07/06/2006 14:42

Thanks Lert - I want to photograph it rising over a particular hill when it's as far south as it gets. I'm actually going to photograph it at about sunset on the evening before the night of the full moon, when it should be high enough in the sky to be just rising over the hill. Am I doing this so there will still be enough light to capture details of the hill as well as the moon? No, I'm doing it so I don't risk attack by werewolves on the night of the full moon  .

A free program I use to make thumbnails and reduce the size and megabyte content of images is called "Photo2Web Publisher" - it's very simple and easy to learn to use with a bit of experimenting - you can find it on this website:

That's quite interesting Dan - was it a very long exposure time? I wonder how big a flash you would need to get the same effect out in the country away from the city lights.

Re: Winter 2006 Weather Images - 09/06/2006 17:33

More amazing images! Well done everyone!

I 'attempted' to go fog chasing this morning, and it was quite thick around the foot hills of the Dandenongs, but half way up the mountain it was blue skies all around! My trip to Sherbrooke Forest was abandoned, and I chose elsewhere instead! Not as much fog as I had hoped for, but at least I got out! wink . Plenty more images here.

The sky looks like it's on fire there Helen, great shot.

I'm usually to busy in the morning to get the camera out, but I just had to stop for 10 mins on Friday to get the shot.

Thanks for the comments. Steve I think we've had about 2 days out of the last 12 days with out frost. Friday was the thickest with the fog.

Finally got my web site back up, thanks Microsoft for wrecking it. But that’s another story.

Mountain Man, great shot of your young bloke on the dam.
Michael L, love your work, real moody one that last one.

Pingtang, great images, especially that last one.

Ben, great photos, bit of a pea souper there.

Stephen, lovely sunset, pity about the bloke in the shot though.

Blizz, awesome photo! What a sight that would be to see.

Nice shots Blizz! I didn't have my cam with me when I was in Katoomba (didn't even have my car, so...) and the mist hung around until well into the morning, which is unusual.

Which lookout did you go to for that shot? Somewhere along Cliff Drv?

Yeah, the first lookout on left as you go up the hill, away from the scenic railway. Its nice and flat for the tripod there although today saw half a dozen or so teenage girls arrive and break the silence. Crikey I'm old, would have loved that twenty years ago.

About 10am. There was six or seven or them - looked like some sort of camping group with two older women. Very noisey! Probably mistook me for their grandfather, with my balding head and wrinkles.

Yeah, I have quite a few that need to jump into PP. I did some to f22 and slower shutter speeds I think, to try and create a liquid look for that fog, like a big inland lake, as it was moving around in the wind and figured I may as well play around with the movement.

Re: Winter 2006 Weather Images - 25/06/2006 09:56

I have not had much to take pictures of lately, rather benign weather. There was a waterspout near the Illawarra around sunset on the 20th June. I did not get ( or see ) the waterspout as I was in work.

After work I did a drive by Warilla Beach, a good 15-20mins after sunset and tripoded these images of the cumulus line that produced the spout, unfortunately nothing for me, but the shots are nice. The shutter speed was around 10 secs, therefore the soft look.

Dan, get yourself The Panorama Factory ... you can try it out with the trial version first, which will leave the PF logo on the photo.

Great pics, as always, everyone! Nice to see lightning in Winter. The best I can do at the moment is more fog....starting to get a little boring, but hopefully Spring and Summer will bring some better ops!

Thick fog in Melbourne this morning.....I bet you've never seen footy goals shaped like this before  . It's my first vertical pan taken wide angle...I still haven't learnt not to do that!!! A couple more foggy pics here.

Re: Winter 2006 Weather Images - 26/07/2006 10:44

The foggy mornings seem to be a bit more regular than normal this winter. Living almost opposite Wattle park, I should take more advantage of this for photo ops, coz looking at others in here (eg. Stormygirl) I need a fare bit more practice.

Here is one taken facing West at about 07:30. There is a line of pine trees in the foreground, and the benches are on the edge of a sporting oval.

Here is also a "grayscale" version of the photo. I thought it added interesting depth to the image.

Re: Winter 2006 Weather Images - 26/07/2006 11:13

Hey Rog!
I have had a 2 minute play with your pic in PSCS2 and adjusted the levels and curves a little and added a slight USM. It just adds a little more contrast to the image and gives it a little more 'oomph'.

It is all about personal taste, and I'm not the best at processing pics myself, but a little added contrast makes a difference!

If you don't like me playing around with your image I'll gladly remove it and delete it from my files! I've decided digital photography is all about trial and error, both in the camera and in the processing. The good thing about it is you don't waste money on film costs of dodgy prints!

Posted by: Instability

Re: Winter 2006 Weather Images - 26/07/2006 14:22

Stormygirl eek eek ,

That looks heaps better. And no problems with you playing around with the pic, as the other beauty of digital photography is the ability to share and learn  .

BTW, what is USM?

Rog.

Re: Winter 2006 Weather Images - 26/07/2006 14:51

Nice pics, nice bit of barrel distortion there Jane (I think standing back a bit further will solve the problem, you can always crop). The fog was pretty heavy here too. I purchased a book form the RMIT Bookshop in Melbourne which goes in to detail about Landscape and Nature Photography with PS CS2. Hoping to learn some new tricks.
Posted by: stormygirl

Re: Winter 2006 Weather Images - 26/07/2006 14:55

No worries Rog! We're all here to learn...well, at least I know I am!!

USM - Unsharp Mask. http://www.naturescapes.net/122004/tg1204.htm

....and lots more info here: http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&q=unsharp+mask+&btnG=Search&meta=

TNL: A bit of barrel distortion?? This is why I shouldn't take pans on 18mm wide angle. It was my first vertical pan so I thought I'd post it anyway! Always lots to learn...so little time!

hey guys. went down to the grampians last night for a church gig. playing and jamming. was fun.
anyway was a nice line of storms over there. The time difference between the 2 shots is about 30min. however the colours remained the same! any idea why?

Amazing sunset image!

Re: Winter 2006 Weather Images - 27/07/2006 17:54

I would imagine two things happened. The cloud the sun was shining on moved at the same speed as the setting sun or was large enough to capture the same light. The moisture level, temp wind etc all remained the same or altered in the correct manner to form the same colour result.

Then again there may have been external factors like smoke or haze affecting the atmosphere.

Its all down to angles of refraction isnt it? I forget.

Fantatsic images you easterners. We in the meantime are drowning in highs and warm spring type weather. (which is pretty pleasant I gotta say). I've posted this pic here because its a sign of the weather as much as weather itself - hot air ballooning in winter! Not very common, but the highs and calm weather that comes with it made for the perfect conditions...
rest here..

Re: Winter 2006 Weather Images - 09/08/2006 19:32

Tim, what an adventure! Something I will do one of these days. Fantastic pics!

It was about this time last year on August 9th that us Victorians were jumping about madly with the prospect of snow falling in Melbourne the next day. I remember the day well as if it was yesterday! Snow reports were coming in from places like The Great Ocean Road, Flinders, and Phillip Island....places that would not normally receive snowfalls.

Winter this year has been shocking really, in terms of snow, so if you want a trip down memory lane of the events last year, feel free visit my site where I have a small report and heaps of images taken by Dane Newman, who went to Korumburra in search of snow.....and found plenty of it! Now that was some cold front! eek

A little bit of SDS relief in SA this morning.

Here's one reasonable pic I got. Please excuse the quality. The lightning was around 25kms away and silly me still had the ISO set at 1600 from last night. shocked

Quality isnt great on the funnel ones as they are in most cases 100% crops. Sorry!

Re: Winter 2006 Weather Images - 29/08/2006 16:50

I posted this elsewhere but thought it might be of interest here too. It's a night shot of Mt Wellington (Tas) a couple of weeks ago. Took it over a 3 minute exposure by moonlight from my house.

Look carefully to the left of the big tower Juust above the Mt top you can see a streaky star trail. Notice also the very strong blown out light from the building on the top.

Re: Winter 2006 Weather Images - 30/08/2006 10:04

BW it was shot on an Olympus OM4 with Fuji Reala 100 iso film at 150mm on a Zuiko 75-150 zoom.

Shot at approx 3 minutes and F8, I bracketed a couple and also changed composition with a couple of others.

One of the others shows star trails better but not much of scenic value in the foreground.

I love good ole fashioned film, traditional cable release and good tripod. mind you a digi was handy as a glorified light meter. wink

I cheated in using a Canon powershot 700 on 400 iso, max shutter speed (15 seconds) got a bit of an image (very grainy, underexposed etc), used some mental calcs and a bit of educated guesswork and hey presto. smile

Excellent Dave. I too am a very big fan of film. I have two Olympus OM10's and a variety of other film cameras, old and new. My favourite is an old praktica TL1000
Do you ever take startrails with your film cameras? No matter how long the expoure, theres no noise.

I want to try a startrail with the AE1+P... set it to the SCP and do a post-dusk to pre-dawn shot.

Robbie, what your recommendation be re film speed and aperture?

Re: Winter 2006 Weather Images - 30/08/2006 19:58

Helen, my longest exposure is only about 1.5 hours. Loo has been right out to 8-10 hours.
I would be using 100 speed film with an F5 or F5.6 apperture.
Loo might be able to correct me on this, but thats where i would start.
You have to have absolutely no moon for the whole period or you will over expose the photo.
Posted by: Lindsay Knowles

Re: Winter 2006 Weather Images - 30/08/2006 21:08

Great shot Dave.
I have done a 10 hr exposure. Pretty awesome shot but I really like the shorter exposures. 30 mins onwards will give the best effects.
Try and get a tree in the pic.I dont know why but try to get it on the left hand side of the pic.It just seems better that way confused
As Robbie said 100 speed film or better still slide film for the real jump out and hit you in the face shot. cool I wouldnt go under f5.6. You would be amazed how bright the sky really is when it is pitch black and no city lights.

Re: Winter 2006 Weather Images - 30/08/2006 21:28

Thanks Robbie and Loo, much appreciated and will give that a go at the next New Moon.

Loo, I sure know about a bright night sky out here. Nearest hamlet is Booborowie (4km NW), nearest small town is Burra (22km SE), nearest large town is Clare (33km SW) and Adelaide is 185km away, though you can see the glow.

The Milky Way is amazingly bright on a cool night with enough light to actually see outlines of objects quite clearly. Give me the country life over city living any day. laugh

Something a litle different from last Sunday.
A large fire in an industrial site caused some interesting cloud formation to feed in towards the city just before sunset...
Would this be a form of pyrocumulus?

5 shot horizontal pan.

Posted by: Volkl_1

Re: Winter 2006 Weather Images - 30/08/2006 22:10

Strike3, thats pretty cool. It certainly is a pyrocumulus.

While we are on the topic of startrails, here is a link to my startrail page. I cant wait for the warmer weather to take startrails again. This time of year, frost, dew and fogged up lenses are a problem!!lol
The vertical startrail photo on this page with the fence in it was under an hour. Loo and I were standing out in the middle of nowhere last summer taking startrails, but the clouds started rolling in so we had to close our shutters early!!

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to take long exposures for startrails with my 350D? If so, could someone please give me an idea how I would do this - ie settings.

That night shot of Mt Wellington & Robbie's startrails are awesome!

You most certainly can, Grant. laugh

When I do a startrail of an hour or so, I set a focal length between 18mm and 21mm, an aperture of f/3.5 and an ISO of either 100 or 200 like this one:

Any longer and I'd be taking Robbie and Loo's advice and set a smaller aperture of f/5.6 for better results.

Just remember to have a full battery (or two if you have the battery grip).

Nice Pic Dave pity about the window reflection.

It's also worth mentioning that a cable release is essential for long exposures.

I'm looking forward to trying some aurora photography, there was a solar storm on Tuesday but during the day for Aust.

A few images for winter taken a few weeks ago at Byron bay Lighthouse where i was lucky enough to camp there all weekend participating in an Amatuer radio International lighthouse weekend.
The Byron Bay Trust which manages the place allow us each year to support a worthwhile excerise being able to activate ,talk to other Lightstations around the world.Stations heard this year were several New Zealand stations, just about all states of Australia, Japan, Carribean and a breif contact with Alaska. Since we are at the bottom of the sunspot cycle propagation conditions were poor but will get better each year on now smile

Re: Winter 2006 Weather Images - 03/09/2006 18:46

Grant,

To take start trails with your 350D, you need a remote, the IR one is best RC1, you can then set the camera to Manual mode (M on the dial), and then set to camera up so that you press the button on the RC1 once to open the shutter, and again when you want to close the shutter.

You can pick up the RC1 here in Australia for about $45, or you can get them from China on ebay for about AU$20.

From what I have read (correct me if I am wrong), without the remote, on the 350D, you are restricted to the maximum exposure time on the timer, and you would get camera wobble.

Kane.

Re: Winter 2006 Weather Images - 04/09/2006 01:46

Gidday Kane,

Your info is very much appreciated wink . I ordered the RC-1 when I got the camera as this was the one I was advised to get at the time. After doing a little research into it I was a bit worried that this was the only remote that did not allow those long exposures - so thanks for setting me straight on that one laugh .

As for setting up the camera & getting the remote to work, i'll have to consult the manual on those!

Many thanks again,
Grant

PS Don't suppose you remember off-hand how to set the camera up with the RC-1 so one press opens the shutter & again to close it?

Grant, set the Mode Dial to Manual, set the shutter speed to Bulb, using the Av button, set your Aperture, then point the camera at what you want to shoot.

Press the Transmitter Button on the RC-1 remote and the exposure will start 2 seconds later. To stop the exposure, press the Transmitter Button again.

Cheers, Helen

Re: Winter 2006 Weather Images - 04/09/2006 12:58

Mick & Thelastname, answers to your queries concern the same item.

Mick
The light didn't wash out the photo because it is only a tiny area of the photo and that light is unable to "light up" the whole scene, see below for further info.

The Last Name
The "reflection" on the window is actually the electric lighting that Mick asked about, emanating from the building - it is so bright because it was the brightest light source in the scene and that very small portion of the photo is grossly overexposed.

As to the amount of snow - it was the best fall of the winter for us and it disappeared rapidly.
