Far southern hemisphere from space

Far southern hemisphere from space - 12/01/2019 01:15

And now for something completely different. Not sure where to post this. It's a bit different! I have my own satellite receiving station with a dish in my backyard setup for Himawaricast reception via Jcsat2B.

I like to watch cyclones with it, but sometimes the images that come down from the satellite just blow me away. This was received with a 2.3m solid dish at 1200UT Jan11 or 10pm EST. A thin Earth showed as a crescent in visible light. When rotated and zoomed to the south, a large low pressure system can be seen which was located to the south of western Australia.

To the top left, the southern polar ice cap - Antarctica can be seen as light cyan in this palette. The thin blue line at the top which envelopes the image is our breathable atmosphere.

Visible at 644nm mapped to blue, near infrared at 860nm mapped to green, and 1610nm mapped to red.

I know, I can't stop staring at it myself. I would love to animate this in high resolution but too much computer power needed.

Nice work Learjet. The resolution is amazing. I play with hf weather fax lol. I have been thinking of playing with sat fax a lot less quality.

Thanks all. Ozone Doug, have you tried the VHF NOAA or Russian Meteor sats? They are fairly easy to receive. I must admit Himawari 8 beats the lot in resolution, although Meteor M2 is pretty close. Doesn't have as many channels though.
