TOP PRIORITY FOR IMMEDIATE BROADCAST

Severe Weather Warning
for HEAVY RAINFALL
For people in West and South Gippsland and parts of Central and North Central Forecast Districts.

Issued at 7:43 pm Thursday, 7 December 2017.

A low pressure trough crossing the State will clear northeast Victoria Friday morning.

HEAVY RAIN which may lead to FLASH FLOODING is possible over part of the Central, North Central and West and South Gippsland Districts tonight.

Widespead totals of 10 to 20 mm are expected, within the area over 3 to 6 hours, with falls of 25 to 50mm possible over West and South Gippsland. Local thunderstorms may also lead to isolated higher totals.

Locations which may be affected include Melbourne, Morwell, Traralgon, Sale, Moe and Maffra.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Don't walk, ride or drive through flood water;
* Keep clear of creeks and storm drains;
* Be aware that in fire affected areas, rainfall run-off into waterways may contain debris such as ash, soil, trees and rocks;
* Be alert that in areas recently affected by fires, heavy rainfall increases the potential for landslides and debris across roads;

The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 11:00 pm AEDT Thursday.
Warnings are also available through TV and Radio broadcasts, the Bureau's website at www.bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 217. The Bureau and State Emergency Service would appreciate warnings being broadcast regularly.

Nice 15-30mm across the city with a few 40-50mm totals with storms all falling in 2-3 hours so nice follow up to rain on the weekend.

Wet night in gippy solid 20-40mm out there.

Heatwaves building next week another run of 30c days with our first 40c in Vic looking likely.

Here's my report for what was without a doubt an amazing night! grin

The rainband lasted until 12:30am, nearly 8 hours after it began yesterday afternoon! The rain was absolutely torrential at times.

No further thunderstorm activity affected us, but we had lots of heavy showers sweep through Belgrave up until around 9am. Further showers affected our corner of the Melbourne area up until about midday but these missed us either just to the east or just to the west.

Nonetheless, a great follow-up to an exceptionally wet start to summer! The rainband and associated thunderstorms dumped 31.6mm, with an additional 6.3mm from the showers that followed behind.

So in total I collected 37.9mm of rain in the 24 hours to 9am! This brings my event, monthly and Summer 2017/2018 total to 140.1mm!! This also beats February's 132.9mm total, making December 2017 my wettest month for the year already! =D

This is already turning into one of my wettest Decembers ever. I need to try to dig out my old rainfall records and add them to my climate database, but from memory my wettest December ever was 2007 when I collected over 200mm!

Here's a breakdown of my December rainfall totals for from 2011 to 2016, plus the highest 24-hour rainfall totals for those months.

December 2011 - 108.6mm (highest 24-hour rainfall - 47.5mm on 11/12/2011)
December 2012 - 37.9mm* (highest 24-hour rainfall - 16.9mm on 05/12/2012)
December 2013 - 62.1mm (highest 24-hour rainfall - 17.9mm on 05/12/2013)
December 2014 - 64.2mm (highest 24-hour rainfall - 22.1mm on 07/12/2014)
December 2015 - 48.4mm (highest 24-hour rainfall - 28.4mm on 26/12/2015)
December 2016 - 92.9mm (highest 24-hour rainfall - 59.0mm on 30/12/2016)

My average December rainfall for the 2011-2016 period is 69mm.

* Note the December 2012 total does not include any missing weather data when I left Melbourne for a five-week summer holiday through Eastern Australia (including Corryong, Merimbula, Sydney and Brisbane) and Fiji.

If we can score at least another 10mm this month (and hopefully much more to hold back the bushfire risk), it'll be the first time in over six years when I passed the 150mm mark in a single month. The last time I exceeded that threshold was back in November 2011 when I collected 170.8mm.

From memory (I will confirm this when I get a hold of my old records lol) my wettest month EVER is February 2005 with somewhere between 210-230mm, the vast majority of which during the epic storm event in the early part of the month when I experienced my highest 24-hour rainfall total ever with 181mm up until 9am on February 3rd!!

We're only 8 days into the month, so there's plenty more time for more good soaking early-summer rainfall (be it drizzle or downpours). Just no extended hot, dry spells please. frown

Not sure what my overnight low was because I forgot to reset my weather station, but it was only 10.1C when I got out of bed this morning. It was cold and wet until lunchtime, but now it's a delightfully mild (almost warm), mostly sunny day with light winds. Currently around 22C. smile

The vast majority of showers have gone now, although we may score a couple more this weekend as that cold front just south of the Bight and nearing Tassie brushes past the Victorian coastline. smile

Edit: forgot to mention that my sister's unit in Ferntree Gully copped some minor flooding issues from blocked gutters during last night's deluge.

Reached a warm, mostly sunny top of 23.3C here in Belgrave yesterday arvo. Splendid weather for spending the evening down in Narre Warren North, Endeavour Hills, Doveton, Dandenong and Ferntree Gully. smile

As for today...

Overnight low of 9.9C, reached a top of 27.3C, currently around 19C.

Thanks to the cold front that swept through Tassie last night, it was a chilly, mostly cloudy start to the day with a few light showers. But after lunch it turned out to be another warm, mostly sunny afternoon with cool breezes. smile

Welcome Jarek!

Do you want to fill in "location" in your profile? It doesn't have to be too exact - just enough that people reading this forum have an idea whereabouts you are when you comment on weather at your location.

Looking forward to your contributions - reports, discussions etc.
