Yeah, just staggered in from the pub ... if only!

Bairnsdale AWS has 35mm so far - quite amazing. Much of that was before we had anything significant here. Since around dusk we've had heavy and sometimes torrential showers. (Some as heavy as I can remember in a long time).

Don't know how much we've had here (got one of those gauges you actually have to go and look at) but I don't think we're near 35mm.

Will report in the morning.

This is the heaviest rain in a long time!

Thought our chances had finished 3 hrs ago TB - but just copped another light shower ....thought that the lee of Tassie would finish things here, but over past 30 mins, showers seems to be able to spring up from nowhere! - now 2 1/2 inches up on Baw Baw!

Hopefully you will report a 20+mm total tomorrow!

....and keep out of that Pub - else we will all be talking about you! smile

Celebrating a big rainfall total seems like it's worth a trip to the pub.

One of the long-standing traditions of the Bureau's climate section is that anyone who gets 100mm in a day at the gauge closest to them (or their own gauge if they have one) has to bring in a cake. Haven't yet had the chance to put to the test whether 200 means two cakes (there was a near-miss when someone who lives in the Dandenongs got 196 in the February 2011 event).

Reminds me of trips home from Loy Yang over the years - but it wasnt a cake shop that we called into!

It's been raining here all day on and off. Very heavy at times and still chucking it down as we speak.

My rain gauge is not the most reliable and only ever under estimates. Since midnight it is showing just over 32mm and it's still raining.

Not bad for Tarneit! Loving it.

Yes. Superb figures.

We got 32.5mm here which is fantastic!

Bairnsdale AWS must, I think, have got a very heavy downpour earlier yesterday which set its total up.

Still have light to moderate showers here adding a few more mm.

This has changed the situation here but will it be too cold now for any growth?

Email from home tells me that 9.8mm been emptied this morning. So over 60mm for the sequence. Lots of water lying around from Diggers Rest to the NW burbs. Guy at work showed me a picture of the lake in his yard near the airport up against his house.

13.5mm here, bit of overnight drizzle may have added to that.

No wind with the rain, (plenty in the lead up though).

Final tally for this thread after some mid arvo showers = 16.26mm - after the previous months, we will happily accept that!

With another 5mm after this morning's reading, that makes 37mm for the event. Guess that means we did pretty well in this neck 'o the woods. It really is impressive how, when that wind turns to the S or SSE in this set-up it can drop large amounts but (even though it's over a sustained period) position, uplift, angle to the wind is very crucial.

Yep, and wind strength I've come to notice, if its high, the Tassie rain shadow effect seems to hit us worse for low pressure systems located below or E/NE of Tassie?

After the 5mm I reported yesterday, we've had an additional 5.5mm. So that bring the total for the event to 42.5mm - best rain for very long time. Partly cloudy, light breeze and cold atm.

..and that drizzle with the unexpected low pressure system drift back towards Sydney overnight gave us another 0.75mm - 17mm for this system.

Very unusual low pressure system, was closed off in the bight, did a loop around the base of Tassie, went NNE then a brief drift W towards Sydney before it got sick of us! Basically as a cut-off low system the whole time???
